Blue,
This is new to me, & further checking took me to section DZ114# private as you stated. Just goes to show there's always something to learn.
Billy,
Ford DZ114# Private.
Deedholder is "Anne Comerford. 65 Court, Portland Gardens. 4 only. Lawn memorial 21/8/1979."
Interred are:
Austin Comerford, 65c Portland Gardens L5, age 74. int 11/7/1978
Mary Mansell, 36 Palmerston Drive L21 age 35 years. int 16/11/1981
and then it has
Mary Mansell, 37 Palmerston Drive L21 age 35 years, int 16/11/1981.
sorry for the confusion

I often refer to the usage guide pdf Patrick produced but it can still be confusing. Just so Billy knows two thirds of people buried at Ford are in public graves. There are no pauper burials. After WW2 most people at Ford were buried in private graves.

No problem, it is all very interesting - as you say there is always something new to learn. And thanks for the details of the people in the grave - the Mary will be their only daughter, although I didn't know she was married so that is all new information too (I have yet to find her marriage registration, but it looks like she had two children who I also didn't know about). Can I assume from the above that there is no record of Anne Comerford being interred there (presumably happening after 1989)? Next time I'm at Ford, I'll nip over and have a look.

Just so Billy knows two thirds of people buried at Ford are in public graves. There are no pauper burials. After WW2 most people at Ford were buried in private graves.

Makes sense. All my great-grandparents, whose burials I can find, are in public graves at Ford and all my grandparents are in private graves (I assume it is also the immigrant story, with the first generation working hard, so the next generation have better chances in life). I have the original document for my maternal grandparents grave, which is nice.

No the change had nothing to do with people being later generations than earlier Irish migrants. This change in burial practices was across the board throughout the country and affected people of all backgrounds and religions.

"The majority of these were buried in public graves until 1948 when the Labour government introduced burial grants and the public burials fell to single figures per year."

Ah right. Interesting. Another thing to thank the post-war government for.

Hi Marienne

Can you check a section lettering for a public grave on your records? It's for a Patrick Foy, age 36, Court 2 Collingwood Street, buried on 7 August 1864. On the burial records it says Section D but I think it's a similar scenario to Section B that became Section BZ can you confirm that it is on your records as DZ?

Thanks,

Blue
