So they wrote his name down in the index, but he was never buried there? I wonder what happened.

Strangely, DZ114, is a public grave and the 9 burials therein were all between 22/3/1864 & 25/3/1864.
I am thinking the wrong grave has been linked to Austin, hence (maybe) the # sign.
