Can someone help me in identifying where my 2nd Great Uncle could be buried? Joseph Carson was buried at Ford Cemetery, from Liverpool Workhouse aged 28, on 14 October 1888 grave 2508.  I can see that at least one other unrelated person was also buried there and I can presume it's a paupers grave.  I've noticed the map of Ford Cemetery but can't work out where the unmarked grave might be.

This will be what's called a Public Grave not a Pauper's Grave there are no Pauper's Graves at Ford Cemetery as Ford is a Roman Catholic Cemetery it does not belong to Liverpool City Council or the old parish authority it belongs to Liverpool Roman Catholic Archdiocese. Each 'single interment' in the grave was paid for by the next of kin and the funeral would have been arranged by next of kin. Most burials at this time were single interments in Public Graves it was the norm and did not necessarily reflect the person's financial standing. The burial records often leave out the section letter Marienne should be able to confirm the section for you. I think it's section SV but I'm not certain. I think Marienne has access to typed up lists that include the section letter for each burial.

Hi Blue, I'm very grateful for your reply.  I've obviously confused public with pauper over the years.  Joseph had only just come over from Ireland, married in February 1887.  He didn't even manage to see his son Joseph born in February 1889

Most people confuse public graves with pauper graves because we use today's standards and think because they didn't have a family plot and a gravestone that they were paupers. There are some interesting stats available for Ford Cemetery on the link below. Between 1859-1989 two thirds of the 300,000 plus burials at Ford Cemetery were in public graves (the big grassed areas without gravestones) so there really was no shame in this type of burial. The increase in family plots and decrease in public graves became more evident in the 20th century.

Joseph is buried in Ford SV 2508 which is, as you guessed, a public grave. There are 5 other occupants.

Hi Ozranga
Could you see if you can find the grave of my great grandmother Margaret Ashley.  I have just found some paperwork for Ford Cemetery and it says they paid for a new family grave at Ford.  This was on the 25 August 1944.  Could you please tell me if anyone else is in the grave.
