Were they living in the Bootle area? Possible deaths for John in 1949 and Mary in 1938 both in Bootle. If Ozranga has no luck finding them at Ford Cemetery they might have been buried in Bootle Cemetery. Some information here:-

Hi Bertha,
I checked 2 x John Ge(r)rard & 2x Mary, but their births taken from age at death were 1915,1868,1857,1924; so it seems no luck here.
Blue may have your answer in Bootle cemetery.
cheers

Hi, thank you both for your replies, yes they were living in Bootle.  I'll do as you suggest and look at the Bootle Cemetery.

Hi Marienne,
This is another one with gravediggers' notebook info but no burial register entry on Ancestry, so no address.
Thomas Phillips, age left blank, Grave 1127, buried 4th February 1894.
I'm hoping this is my great grandfather. Thank you again.

There's a second record with more information:-

Name: Thomas Phillips
Residence: Liverpool Coroner
Age: 32
Burial Date: 4 Feb 1894
Grave: B 1127
Burial Place: Ford Cemetery

Unfortunately no home address. There was a Coroner's inquest so that was the contact address. Most of the old Coroner's records have not survived (nothing from 1894). According to the press he was a gunsmith lodging at 27 Phythian Street. Inquest held on Wednesday 31 January 1894 found that he died on Tuesday 30 January 1894 of pneumonia, with heart failure, accelerated by heavy drinking.

Thanks for that, Blue70. Not the man I want then, but it eliminates another possible.
I was under the impression no coroners' records at all had survived from any death more than 25 years ago.
Hmm !
