Can't find John Buckley in Glossop
« on: Friday 21 June 13 16:47 BST (UK) »
Hi

Tried a bit of time trying to find out what happened to John Buckley to no avail so thought if ask for help.

John Buckley born 12th Feb 1857 in Glossop marries Sarah Shepley in 1876. They have two children John James Buckley and Emily Buckley. The last information I have of John is the 1881 census where he is living with his grandfather John Dixon at 183 High St East occupation Coal Carter.

His wife dies on the 13th of Jan 1888 and her occupation is 'widow of John Buckley Coal Carter'. Sarah isn't buried with John either.

I don't know what happened to him or a likely death certificate so any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Hi Heather

Thanks for your message.

Yes that's the correct Sarah, she's currently with her sisters family on the 1881 census.

John James was born on the 11th August 1877 born 183 High Street East. John James on the 1881 census is is with his gran and her second husband James Hallas at the George & Dragon pub in Charlesworth.

On John James marriage certificate in 1900 his father is given as John but isn't mentioned as deceased, although appreciate that wasn't always stated if they were indeed dead.

Thanks

Hi
I have found a tree with him in.
It says that he died in Glossop in 1890 aged 35. The evidence that they have is a will.
McClintock family tree

Hi Heather

Thanks for looking again. I'm aware of that tree as I've done research for Bob McClincock but that's not the right John Buckley. I thought it was originally and Bob took the information from my tree after i found a registered death in Hayfield in 1890 but when i researched it i found his burial details and he was older when he died than my John Buckley. The John Buckley mentioned in the will died in Rochdale and the details in the will means it would not be mine either.

My Gran who would be the granddaughter of John Buckley once said that he may have moved to Canada as John James (my Grans father) was brought up by his grandmother at the George & Dragon pub. When I ask her more about this she no longer remembers. (She's 99).

How can I go about looking at emigration records as I've never researched them before and don't know where to start? I guess if it was true he would have left between 1881 & 1888

Thanks

Hi Olie:

You could post a question on the Canada Board here on rootschat for a start. Here is the Library and Archives Canada site to look at.

Just can't find him and there is no real evidence to say he did go but will start looking at this possibility

Hi Olie:

Had a quick look at Canadian passenger arrivals after 1881 and did come across a John Buckley, 26, Lab., traveling as a single man on the ‘Sardinian’. The ship departed from Liverpool and arrived at Quebec, Que - 1882/09/10. I’ve attached the link to his name on the ship’s passenger list.

Its a long shot and nothing to say that it is your John Buckley, but just thought I’d pass it along.
