Emelia STEPHENS born about 1776
« on: Thursday 20 June 13 16:48 BST (UK) »
Trying to find the birth of my 3 x Gt.Grandmother who was probably born in Edinburgh.  Her father was James STEPHENS who married Hannah PRATT in 1775 at St Cuthberts (West Church) in Edinburgh.  James was a Shoemaker working in Charles Street (1778) and Kings Stable (1780). Emelia had a sister, Eleanor, who was born around 1782.  I have been unable to find any baptism records for either of them.  The family later moved to Birmingham around 1800 and remained there.  There might be a connection to Dumfries and Galloway as a death notice for James was placed in the Dumfries and Galloway Standard in 1847 - but I have no idea what the connection might be.

Grateful for any help.

Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat.

There is another baptism which I think must be for a child of this couple:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XY3V-9VL

I can't say I've come across that name before.  I've not had any luck with Emilia and Eleanor.  :(

Hi,

I have found the marriage on LDS site, transcribed as between James Stephen and Hanna Bratt (sic)

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYMR-1XX

also shown as Edinburgh parish rather than St Cuthberts West Church.

Thanks Nell.  I have seen this baptism before, and agree the parents are the same.  Davinell is a strange name.  Definitely one to follow up I think.  Guess I might have to pay a visit to the archives in Edinburgh to look into it more, or perhaps email them for more information.  Pity Family Search doesn't show Emelia or Eleanor.

Thank you Tom.  My information on the marriage came from the Edinburgh Parish Register and was given to me by a member of Scotfamtree.   West Church is shown as St Cuthberts if you Google it!

ST CUTHBERTS
"St Cuthberts or West Church Parish - It is not perfectly easy to draw a precise line between the suburbs and the country, and therefore it is necessary to mention that the inhabitants of Lauriston, Tollcross, Castlebarns, Fountainbridge, West Church Charity Workhouse, Water of Leith, Stockbridge, Silvermills, Canonmills, Broughton and Leith Walk are included in the numbers stated for the suburbs."
(From the Statistical Account of Scotland 1791-1799 Vol II)

Thanks for the information that you found on the marriage.

Hi Judy,

Here is the Edinburgh Parishes map, you will see St Cuthberts Church arrowed, not far from King Stables Road, which leads to the Grassmarket.

Wow! Thanks Tom.  What a great map and interesting to see that Kings Stables Road is near to St Cuthberts.  I have saved it for future reference.  Might be relevant that they are close to each other as he probably lived in the area when working as a shoemaker.  And not knowing Edinburgh the map will be very useful.

Any idea where New Church would be in the 1776 time?  I haven't had any luck in Googling that one as it just comes up with lots of new churches!!  His bride, Hannah Pratt, was from New Church parish.

Hi Judy,

Could the New Church be New Greyfriars of the "Greyfriars Bobby" fame.

Hi Tom

New Greyfriars is a strong possibility!   I've had another look at the map and see that it is the other side of Kings Stables to St Cuthberts.  I must look into this more.  Thanks for the suggestion.
