Having spent some time in the area around Unanderra I believe as Sue suggests it will not be of any consequence in your search. I travelled over the crossing many, many times in years gone past. In fact my Uncle owned much of the land around there. There is no crossing there anymore it has been replaced by an adjacent high level bridge over the rail at 5 Islands Road. I don't even think the crossing house is there anymore, however I do remember it as a child.

:) Good news I'm pretty sure I found one of his brothers who is Eric Lee born 18 February 1913 and died 30 December 1994 as the photo that I found is very simular in looks and have some resembulances.

You may already have done this but if you look at The White Pages for ACT you will see that there is still a MAKIN listed at the address given on the electoral roll.  There are others also in ACT who may be your relatives.

May I suggest that this is not a very sound way of researching your family.

It has been suggested that Ronald K MAKIN 's marriage certificates would give you the information you are seeking and the names of his parents should be noted on the certificates.

Information on marriage certificates in NSW -

Bridegroom's full name, occupation, place of residence, conjugal status, place and date of birth, age, father's name and mother's maiden name

Bride's full name, occupation, place of residence, conjugal status, place and date of birth, age, father's name and mother's maiden name

Celebrant's name and witnesses

Quote
Have you purchased [either of] these marriage certificates?

16162/1939
MAKIN Ronald
LILLIARD Heather Eileen
District Wollongong

24572/1957
MAKIN Ronald
AYRES Doreen May
District Marrickville

Transcriptions are a cheaper option to purchasing certified certificates and the information is the same.

May I also suggest you re-read reply#22 and then make a new topic requesting  a lookup to 1918 NSW births in the name of MAKIN with mother Alice.  At least you may find some of Ronald's younger siblings.  Please link this thread to avoid chatters doing duplicate searches.

We can only help you so much.  You need to purchase certificates.

Family history can be fun and enjoyable. The research into existing  records can bring very unexpected findings.

For some people a bit of a "probable family history" is quite enough and this is the sort you are destined to have, kshelly, without getting proper reliable records of you own.

But with only a "probable family history" based on family chat and a few old photos, you cannot truly say you have a family history.  You need reliable documents. These are rarely free, and we here can only  advise you on the correct steps forward.

I wish you every success with your searches.

Sue

Hi there,  Me again  ;D
Hi there,

You mention that Ronald’s parentage may have an Aboriginal or  Chinese heritage, but you are unsure.

The information at NSW SRO’s index to the Unassisted Arrivals NSW 1842-1855 includes at “remarks” that the crewman by the surname MAKIN was a Lascar and from Calcutta.

Lascars crewed many of the sailing ships that came into Sydney during the colonial times.   You may well find that the heritage you are speculating about is from earlier generations.

http://www.southampton.ac.uk/archaeology/research/projects/lascar_lives_and_the_east_india_company.page

The index entry also gives:
MAKIN, (no given name), aged 22, on the Coromandel, C(rew) arriving Sydney 24 Oct 1854 from London.

Cheers,  JM

May I ask if you have followed that up at all?    The NSW SRO's archives are fantastic, and the reading room facilities are simply "tops".

May I also support the comments re getting reliable documents ......  In doing so, may I share some info....   Within one branch of my family tree there's a particular medical condition that has been passed down through several generations.   By looking carefully at my family tree, and then looking at the various NSW BDM death certs, I can clearly see which particular line the condition comes down, which generations it appears to skip and etc.  Medical history is of course vital to those of us who are LIVING as our GPs thrive on knowing as much as possible.    To me, aside from my love of family history, the info I can glean and share with my living family members re our shared medical history is simply PRICELESS ..... so I don't mind spending pennies on the occasional "wallpaper" dud certificate/transcription.

Cheers,  JM
