where is this place in Cavan?
« on: Tuesday 18 June 13 17:43 BST (UK) »
I have been searching for my Conaty Family for years and finally found they were from county Cavan.  In my latest find it states John Conaty was an Apothecary Apprentice.  It lists a Residence but i cannot find it anywhere in Ireland much less county Cavan.  I am thinking it may be misspelled or possibly a townland that has been long abandoned maybe?  Can anyone help me find this place in Ireland so I can find the parish and possibly more info?  I am planning a trip to Ireland in August this year and I would love to visit the area and possibly the church of this area. Below is the info I found, thank you
Rebecca

The townland index shows the town of Kilnaleck as being in Crosserlough civil parish  in Cavan town Poor law union. The town appears to be located in a townland of the same name.

What denomination were your Conaty family ?

(parishes are set up differently for RC and CofI)

here's the town and townland on the 1st edition OSI (Ordnance Survey of Ireland) maps from abt 1837 : Kilnaleck

It's located about 18km (~11 miles) south of Cavan town, and not far from the town of Ballyjamesduff, and also Lough Sheelin - see Cavan town to Kilnaleck (google maps)

Rebecca, here's hoping you have a wonderful and fruitful time tracing your Conatys in Kilnaleck. On our own recent "roots-hunting" trip in May, we stayed at the Glan B & B in Mullaghoran, which is about 11 km or 6 miles from Kilnaleck. We can sincerely recommend it. You'll find the Cavan countryside beautiful, and the hospitality genuine. Good luck!

My Conaty Family was Catholic. The problem in finding them has been that they were born late 1700's and early 1800's and left Ireland pre-famine times in 1826.  No records seem to exist anywhere for these times.  Hopefully some exist in a parish church which is why its so important to find exactly where they are from.  I found Kilnaleck from google maps! thank you.  Now to find out if they have any info for the town or the cemetery.  I plan on visiting there in August.  I did book the B&B thank you!  Now anyone have any hints as to how to find information for the 1700"s for that area?

Records for Crosserlough RC parish, which covered Kilnaleck, go back to 1843, which is just a little later than average (1830) for a rural parish.

see : Crosserlough RC parish, Co. Cavan (Irish Times)

There were two Catholic chapels in the parish in the 1830s at least, one at Crosserlough, which is about 3km east of Kilnaleck, and another at Drumkeely/Drumkilly which is about 5km to the north.

The chapel at Crosserlough is shown on later maps (c1890) as St. Mary's and the one at Drumkilly as St. Joseph's, and both look as though they still exist.

slightly later than the departure of your Conaty family, there are several similar names showing in the Tithe records from the late 1820s/early 1830s. The Tithes mainly applied on agricultural land, not properties in towns, but might include some relations that remained behind.

See : Tithe records

Names can be listed with various different spelling - so the search uses wildcards and includes  Conaughty, as well as Conaty, Connarty etc

Also some possible matching surnames in the parish at the time of Griffith's Valuation, dated 1857 for this area - see : Con*, Crosserlough parish
