Of the three I can only find this John - http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C8813568 - on the NA website. This should match the records on Findmypast. But I cannot find a record on that site.

Once you have the regiment you search series WO12 on the NA. Previous service may have been in the Militia. Their musters are in WO13. So for the Cavan Militia for 1800 it is:  http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_st=adv&_aq=cavan&_cr1=wo13&_dss=range&_sd=1800&_ed=1800&_ro=any

Militiamen were mainly recruited following a ballot. The local record office may still have the men selected plus the 'census' they took of all men over 16.

I too am look for an ancestor from Ireland that according to Ancestry.ca served in the  Canada British Regimental Registers of Service 1756-1900.
James (Jas) Fairfield b, 1787, Shankill, Armagh was enlisted by Lt Collins on Aug 4 1812 at Tullemore, Ireland and was pensioned out of the 48th Foot Regiment as a Private on June 26 1816, in Dublin.

Is there any way to find out where he was and what James was doing in those 4 years? Did he actually serve in Canada/US? My boys will be especially interested to know if their 4x Gt Grandfather had anything to do with the burning down of the White House! http://cdn.rootschat.com/forum/Smileys/classic/cheesy.gif

Re: Canada, British Regimental Registers of Service, 1756- -Matthew Dancey
« Reply #12 on: Wednesday 16 October 24 21:53 BST (UK) »
Hi
I've posted this also on  58th Regiment in Ireland in 1819? Enlistment of Matthw Dancey

A Matthew Dancey, of ?Crosserlough, Co Cavan Ireland enlisted in 1819 in Cavan aged 21 (apparently) He was a labourer. The record of this is on Ancestry, on the Canada Regimental Registers of Service and they have indexed it as Matthew enlisting in the 58th Regiment, but this may not be correct.  The image to the record is from the WO 25/440 series (image 4 of that series from the National Archives). But I'm not even sure if he was enlisted in the 58th - the enlisting officer was a Lieut Thornton. (On the same page, there is also enlisted a Pocerage Dancey fron Monaghan who joined 1822 aged 18 and he did join 58th Regiment).
On the enlistment list it's note that Matthew apparently served from 1820-1822 in either the East or West Indies. I'm trying to find any other records/documents that may show if he was killed in service, or settled in the place of his discharge, or any further service. Any help much appreciated

The "Canada" bit in Ancestry's previous title for this dataset was inaccurate and misleading. They've changed it now, to "UK".

Re Matthew Dancey, the continuation of his record on the next page shows that he was transferred to the Royal African Corps on 23 December 1823. Can't see any other military records for him at the moment.

Hi Shaun
Thanks. I've not currently got an Ancestry subscription, so I'll check the WO 25/440 series again to see if I can find the page you refer to (hopefully it's the next image). Having done an internet search on the Royal African Corps it seems that they were disbanded between 1821-23 and prior to disbanded had received replacement troops from 60th Regiment, so now I'm wondering if Matthew was originally enlisted to 60th? But I guess that part of my query doesn't belong here!
