Issac Clampitt..Bigamist?
« on: Sunday 16 June 13 00:13 BST (UK) »
Hello all:

Could someone help me out this one: I've got two documents from 1799, both involving the marriage(s) of Isaac Clampitt. The first is from January 2, 1799, states that Isaac Clampitt, a mariner, marries Mary Parr in St. Peters, Liverpool. The second document, dated January 3, shows a marriage between Isaac Clampitt, a mariner, and Ann Holt..but within this second document there is mention of Mary Parr..And this document is in Cheshire.

What am I missing here..Can someone look at these two documents and thanks for the help

Sorry but I've tried to load the documents but the file size is too big..any sugesstions

This is the Liverpool one and is shown as an intended marriage - not an actual one

Were the witnesses the same on both entries

Liverpool was in the Diocese of Chester at that time, and the record is of an application for a licence involving a Bond and Allegation.  (Marriage Bonds and Allegations, 1606-1900) An application does not mean a marriage took place, as the licence may have been refused for some reason.

His wife (presumably as no relationships re given) in 1841 is Mary.
Could you transcribe the part re Ann Holt. It seems odd that you say Mary Parr is mentioned in the second document also.

Heywood

Then that ties in with the application for a licence on 3rd January 1799, as the marriage could take place as soom as the licence was issued. As Heywood says the part re Ann Holt seems odd.

Was this a loan in the amount of 500 pounds between Isaac Clampitt and Ann Holt?

The people named in the first paragraph of the marriage bond are those who agree to pay £500 if it turns out that the couple should not be married (by reason of consanguinity etc.).
Usually the groom is one of those named, and often the other bondsman will be a family member.  I've never seen a marriage bond where a woman is the bondsman before, but it appears that in this case it is Ann Holt.
