Trial Records
« on: Thursday 13 June 13 23:06 BST (UK) »
I have a Michael Cotter who was trialed and convicted at Cork to transportation for seven years to New South Wales on 17 August 1830 for stealing a sheep the property of one William Hennessey.

Would anyone be able to advise me please as to where I may be able to find a report of the trial.

Thank you

Pam...Sydney

Pam the irish national archives hold prison records for Cork City Gaol from 1819-1924 so you may be able to source something here for Michael Cotter. :)

Pam, have you looked at www.jenwilletts.com/ConvictShips.JKL.htm
It has an account of the Jane1 sailing from Cove Harbour (Cork) in 1831. The prisoners were held on the hulk of the Surprise before being embarked on the Jane1. Probably in Cork City Gaol prior to this I would imagine. Regards

Many Prison records are available as transcripts on FamilySearch, and also on FindMyPast.ie. These registers do not contain much detail.

see : Prison records 1790-1924

Very few records exist in Ireland relating to Transportation and trials from this period. Most of the surviving records have been indexed and listed on the Ireland Transportation database mentioned earlier.
Remember to check the Resource boards :  Ireland, Dublin, Antrim & Cork (and stickies at the top of other county sub-forums)

Thanks shanew,
I have looked at Family Search to no avail and today I logged into Find MY Past where they have my Michael Cotter. Opening it up it doesn't give me any more details than what I already have which is disappointing.
On one past occasion I was searching for another ancestor from Waterford and through another organisation I was able to obtain a copy of a newspaper report in 1821. By using the contents of that report I was able to trace from where my man came and have met and correspond with a cousin who lives in Waterford. Maybe I was lucky however the organisation I used I feel are no longer in business.

Thank you.
