JAMES SUTHERLAND c 1739
« on: Thursday 13 June 13 13:22 BST (UK) »
My research indicates that my ancestors may have moved to Berwick Upon Tweed England in the late 18th century from Scotland. I have traced my 4th Great Grandfather (James Sutherland) and my 4th Great Grandmother (Hay Sutherland) to a gravesite at the Holy Trinity Church Cemetery at Berwick Upon Tweed, England.

The headstone inscription states the following:

IN MEMORY OF
HAY, WIFE OF JAMES SUTHERLAND
WHO DIED 18 TH NOVEMBER 1811:
AGED 64 YEARS. ALSO
JAMES SUTHERLAND WHO DIED THE
13 TH OF MAY 1819 AGED 80 YEARS:
ALSO WILLIAM SUTHERLAND
THEIR SON WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE
JULY 1ST 1845 IN THE 65 YEAR OF HIS AGE.
ALSO CATHERINE  1 ST WIFE
WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE ON AUGUST 16 TH
1809 IN THE 26 YEAR OF HER AGE.
ALSO ELIZABETH SECOND WIFE OF
THE ABOVE WILLIAM SUTHERLAND
WHO DIED 7 TH APRIL 1864
AGED 80 YEARS

Unfortunately, this is where my Scottish research comes to an abrupt halt.  There was an IGI entry that stated that a marriage between James Sutherland and a Hay Urquhart occurred circa 1777 in Lanarkshire Glasgow Scotland.  But I have been unable to verify this statement.  The IGI record was submitted after 1991 by a member of the LDS Church. No additional information was available.  The IGI entry claimed that Hay Urquhart was born in Glasgow (circa 1756), and that the two wed in her hometown in 1777. They may have produced a daughter Jean c 1778 (IGI), and definitely a son William c 1780.

I would be grateful for any assistance anyone can offer!

Ian Sutherland
