Looking for the family and birthplace of Susannah Powell
« on: Tuesday 11 June 13 20:12 BST (UK) »
Susannah Powell according to the 1841 and 1851 censuses was born either in1786 or 1783. In the 1851 census her birthplace is listed as Chastock, Montgomeryshire by Ancestry but the original image is not very clear and so is difficult to verify. At the time of these censuses, she was living in Howick, Northumberland. Her marriage to James Murray took place in Howick in 1809. By 1841 she was a widow with nine children, Susannah, John, Mary Ann, Jane, Elizabeth, James Powell, Isabella, Charlotte and Maria. Susannah's son James worked as a cabinet maker at Howick Hall, home of Earl Grey, and met his wife there. I wonder if the same was true of Susannah and her husband. If Susannah was a servant at Howick Hall, why had she travelled so far from home? I haven't been able to find any of her Welsh relatives in Northumberland so she seems to have moved alone. I haven't been able to locate her birthplace. Someone has already suggested that it could have been Churchstoke. I would appreciate any help with this.
Northumberland: Robson, Richardson, Murray, Graham, Adam(s), Blyth, Smith, Oliver
Durham: Robe (Robb), Taylor, Alder
Yorkshire: Spence, Cockerell, Lawson Argument
Scotland: Sutherland
Wales: Powell

What an awful image isnt it? (1851)

I am not convinced it says Montgomeryshire at all, and it doesnt mention Wales!
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

What do you think it says? The pattern is to write the county and then the place and I know from the 1841 census that she wasn't born in Northumberland.
Northumberland: Robson, Richardson, Murray, Graham, Adam(s), Blyth, Smith, Oliver
Durham: Robe (Robb), Taylor, Alder
Yorkshire: Spence, Cockerell, Lawson Argument
Scotland: Sutherland
Wales: Powell

The original of the 1851 Census is very difficult to read, but interestingly both Ancestry and Findmypast have the same transcription for her place of birth.

I'm not certain what it says either.

If you look at the National Gazetteer of Wales for places in Montgomeryshire that begin with CH then Churchstoke is certainly the most likely.  http://homepage.ntlworld.com/geogdata/ngw/c.htm
Roberts, Caernarfon, Penygroes, Talysarn, Caernarfonshire
Gambolds, anywhere in the World
Couzens, (and similar spellings) Pembrokeshire

Hi, even if I assume its churchstoke I'm finding it hard to find a Susannah powell, 1780-1790
the best I can see is a possible parents marriage in 1782 in churchstoke  (George powel and mary)
and a remote baptism fo a susanna  (no H) in 1785 on familysearch, shown as llandysul Montgomery, but must be llandyssill, this is about 3 miles from churchstoke.

added, I did say on your other post I'm not good at searching  :) :)

all the land around churchstoke was in the ownership of the earl of powis, lord clive, his daughter married the earl of Northumberland from alnwich castle, quite near to his neighbour earl grey at howick.
she was much the same age as Susannah powell
