If I've found them in the index, where do I find the GRO index reference number??

Thanks so much, both of you. I'm new to Wales records, so I'm much appreciative

To be pedantic (and the GRO probably will be!), the GRO Index Reference consists of:

Year
Quarter
Registration District
Volume No
Page No

You can still order certificates without all these items, but that will involve a search, and will take longer.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Bit late now sorry but if they were buried in one of the Cardiff council cemeteries (as opposed to a church or chapel), then you can get information from Cardiff council... http://www.cardiff.gov.uk/content.asp?nav=2867,2903,5556&parent_directory_id=2865

The ones you are looking for are possibly a bit too early, but they have computerised records of all burials from 1912 according to the website, though they are working backwards and were in 1909 the last time I asked a few months ago.

If computerised, they will give you - free - details of the burial and anyone else buried with them (I've found a great many family members this way). They will give you a plot number and a plan to see the location of the grave.

It may well be worth you asking, you never know they may be back as early as 1904 now.

You can email them at thornhillreception[AT]cardiff.gov.uk and give them the name, age, and quarter of death. It's an amazing service.

Deirdre784,
I just sent an email to Cardiff council, as suggested. I'll let you know if they find anything. Thanks for this!

Also, I did find the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census records for his family already, but thank you so much for searching for me.

That's good news, they're usually very quick so you'll probably get a reply in the next day or two. I should have said it won't give cause of death though.
