COMPLETED Death Records for Cardiff 1900 and 1904
« on: Tuesday 11 June 13 07:43 BST (UK) »
I have found 2 of my ancestors in the FreeBMD Death Index. I'm hoping to get more information on their deaths, w/o having to order their death certificates. Any ideas on how I can get a copy of their death records?

Here is their information in the index:

1) Frederick George Graves
Born: 1871
Death registration: Apr-May-Jun 1904; Cardiff, Glamorganshire; Vol 11a, page 163

2) Mary Ann Graves (nee Weeks)
Born: 1865
Death registration: Apr-May-Jun 1900; Cardiff, Glamorganshire; Vol 11a, page 210

Not sure what info you are hoping to find, without buying the certs.

Maybe you are thinking of burial records? But to stand a chance of finding those you need to know WHERE they died for starters!

But when it comes to name of informant, cause of death etc, you need to buy the certs. There is no other way.

Have you looked for Wills for them? That would give a place of death, in the probate index.

Your profile doesn't say where you live?

But Death Certificates in England & Wales offer much less information than those (for example) in Australia & Scotland.

See here for an example:

Thanks for checking the probate index. I'm not surprised they're not there, as I strongly suspect they were quite poor.

I was mainly interested in cause of death, as they both died when they were relatively young (33, 34), but I was also hoping to find further confirmation around their family relationships (i.e., name of spouse, children). Ordering through Ancestry.com, and including shipping to Canada, each certificate costs CAD$47, which is expensive for a single document.

Lizbd,

That was going to be my next question! I'll go directly to the GRO then.

NEVER order through Ancestry, or any other 3rd party!

The place to order is GRO (General Register Office):
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Cost is £9.25 each. (about CAD$15)

EDIT: Snap, Liz!
