Dillon and Kelly family in Jersey City
« on: Saturday 08 June 13 21:10 BST (UK) »
Im looking for relatives of mine. Patrick Dillon married Delia Kelly around 1899 in Jersey City. Im not sure where Patrick is from (possibly Galway) Delia is from Roscommon or Ahascragh. Patrick was born around 1870 and arrived in the US in 1899 and lived in Jersey City. Delia was born around 1875, arrived in 1893 and also lived in JC. They had a daughter named Helen Dillon in JC

I dont know who Patricks parents are but I was told Delias parents are Michael Kelly and Ann Leonard.

I also posted this in the Galway thread because the ship manifest says Roscommon but a distant relative says its Ahascragh so maybe the borders have changed?

Hi There,

I'm wondering MIGHT this be the Dillon / Kelly marriage - different christian name for the wife though !

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FZPM-MVM

Presuming that Delia's parent's names are correct then here is her baptism

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FP96-2BZ

and some baptisms for siblings of hers

BROTHER JOHN https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGFJ-S2B
BROTHER THOMAS https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FR7N-S2R
SISTER HONOR https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FR7F-158

and a marriage of a brother Michael in Montana

I have relatives that lived in the Ahascragh area and it is very near the Roscommon border although in Galway.
The river Suck is the main boundary between the counties in the area.
For some families the parish they lived in determined the county of allegiance regardless of civil border!

Possible marriage of Michael KELLY and Anne LEONARD in Ballinasloe district in 1872

There was one Delia KELLY birth between 1872 and 1877 however there were several births in Ballinasloe of Bridget KELLYs;
Delia was the pet name for Bridget.
Unfortunately without the mother’s maiden name to go on you can only break down this list further
by ruling out some by deaths or 1901 census records and buying the remainder to get the correct one.

Possible census return for Michael and Anne in 1901 in Clonbrock.
There is a transcription error in the place name. The area is Clooncannon (Dillon), Dillon being the name of the local landlord.

By 1911, Anne is widowed and still in Clooncannon (Dillon) (Clonbrock, Galway) .
She describes herself as married 38 years which ties in with the 1872 marriage.
She also states that she had 10 children of which 8 were still living.
There are 4 listed with her in 1911 and 5 in 1901 which leaves 3 other children unaccounted for.
I think there is a good chance that this is the correct family but obviously proof is required

DILLON was a popular name in the area and many Irish married people from close to their original homes
These are the results searching for Patrick DILLON
from 1869 to 1875 in that area but you would need parents names for confirmation

Hope this start helps your searching.

Hi Sarah as mentioned above, the area is NOW Galway. It was originally Roscommon but there were border changes which makes the area in present day Galway County so maybe you should move it to the Galway county please

Thank you everybody for the links provided. I believe they are accurate according to some distant relatives I talked too. I am very confused with all the names of the area being tossed around....ahascragh, ballinsloe, clooncannon, clonbrock....if I wanted to visit where actually would I be going?

Delia was born to Michael Kelly and Ann Leonard. Ive been told they all are from ahascragh. She had several siblings but Im positive there was a Catherine, Thomas and Nora. Im still not finding much on Patrick Dillon and will look for naturalization records
