edward frank symonds sent on ss vedic 1925

Found that my Father went on SS Vedic on 31st.October 1925 as a juvenile migrant under the British Govn. scheme. It was the maiden voyage so well documented by the Melbourne Post at the time giving comments from crew & paying passengers, not good reading. The hapless youngsters were under the supervision of Mr.G.Davies of the Salvation Army. The NAA were so kind to me,sending by post(I am a retired lady living many years in Spain)a full account of that voyage & I was able to make contact with 3 others who shared a parent in that group. However I have not been able to discover where my Father was assigned once he disembarked in Melbourne.I actually insisted on speaking with the chief activist of the Sal.Army in London but was told that all records were lost during the war!My Father died when I was young so I know so little of his life & ,although I can leave behind all the records I have found going back generations for our family ,there is a gaping hole.I know he came back to UK his passage paid by a relative ,then married my mother. The only things he kept from  that time which like others he didn`t talk about, were a certificate from "The Australian Stockman`s Association" signed "Francis Ross" & with a stamp"Department of Home Affairs" stating he is a member,The other is from "The Australian &  Stock Association" to certify he is "A sworn auctioneer & stock valuer",has a Govn. red stamp & ribbon, dated January 24 1927.Francis Ross Co. I know were well known involved in Stockmans society. But is there a record to show where my Dad went & how he was able to get this certificate? On his marriage certificate he noted his occupation as "stockman",a bit odd in a naval city port unless he was the genuine article.I would like to know,Can you help?

Hi there,

Your thread has got itself onto the COMPLETED section of the Australian Board.  I feel you would get lots of help if it were on the main Australian board, so I am asking a moderator to move it.

The occupation "stockman" was not at all unusual in the 1920s, and there is actually an Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame located in Longreach, Queensland.

Here's a link to the Stockman's Hall of Fame : http://www.outbackheritage.com.au/

Cheers,  JM

Hi,

Could you please tell us how old he was when he came out and what year he sailed back to the UK.

Thanks

His age on the 1925 SS Vedic passenger list is 16yo. So born about 1909.

Thanks Merlin, this means his first ER appearance if he was enrolled wouldn't be there until around 1932/33.

I would think it unlikely there would be a written history of people such as your dad. However some bits have been done on various subjects relating to orphans moved to Australia from Britain at various times (Sunshine and Oranges) Try Googling that.

I have had a look a your posts going back to 2009 and this subject. Australia some times offered a better life for young fit people other than what could be achieved in England and many well being groups organised for these to be freely transported into opportunities in Australia. Your dad obviously got a job with a Stock and Station Agent in Victoria, these are really just like any real estate agent, except they specialise in Rural holdings and generally conduct regular auctions of stock for the properties. Either going to abattoirs or ongoing for breeding or fattening.

A Stockman is really only a general term for someone who in those days rode a horse and possibly moved stock from one pasture to another. In your fathers case more likely he along with others took charge of a herd that was brought in for auction and moved them around the auction yards. not entirely glamorous, just dirty, dusty, smelly hard work.

I don't know why you assume he had no money as he would have been paid just like anyone else. The rate of pay may not have been fantastic but he had a job and in Australia even then he would have had a basic wage. Why he didn't talk about his time out here is anyone's guess, maybe he just didn't want to be here, but it was nothing to be ashamed of and if he followed through with it and was able to keep his job he would have whetherd the depression fairly well. Stockmen got paid and never ran out of food ;D.

There is a very different occupation which can be confused and this is a DROVER. He is someone who rarely visits a city and spends most of his time moving herds from one area to another. Both occupations are sought after now by many backpackers from around the world here in Australia.

I realise that you are keen to fill in the missing years of your father's life, but he was only in Australia for a short time, you know the reasons for him being sent there, you know what he did while in Australia, you know he returned to England - you have pieced together quite a lot about him.

Overall it seems that there are only a few 'missing' years. It may be that there is nothing more to be found and that nothing eventful occurred while he lived in Australia, he simply didn't like it here so was sent the money to return.
