Brilliant! Delighted you got a result Molly. Just goes to show that not everything can be done online, and that sometimes you need to get your hands dirty and check the parish registers/BTs

Did you go to the LDS in  Exhibition Road, opposite the Science Museum? I spent many a happy hour in there when I lived in Notting Hill.

Yes David, that's the place.

Unfortunately, now I come to put my new data on my computer, I find I already have John Murfet marrying Susanna Vincent, but in Fordham on 2 November 1792. That was given to me over the internet by someone called by Jennie Hudson in 2002, so its back to the drawing-board!

On the other hand, Boyd's Marriage Index confirms the Littleport/1795 data.

I think I may go mad!

Cheers,
Molly

If you took the marriage from the parish register that's as good a source as you can get. That Boyds also has it confirms that you didn't make an error.

Once again shows that you cannot rely on other people's trees or IGI member submissions

Hi there. What I wonder now is, who was John Murfet? Could he be the son of Langman Murfet and Margaret Tebitt, born 1763? That would make him two years older than Susanna Vincent, so it looks right, but how on earth could it be proved or disproved? Nobody else has found any such link, but it would be very satisfying to do so.

Any thoughts?

Where was John Murfet 1863 born?

There's a burial on the Cambs FHS site - http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Search.html
of John Murfit age 67 in Littleport in 1830, which would fit very nicely

Did the 1785 marriage of John Murfet and Sarah Vincent state John "of this parish" or was a different parish of residence given? Who were the witnesses at the marriage?

Hi David, thanks for coming back so quickly.

John Murfet was baptised 30 January 1763 in St Andrew's Church, Soham, son of Langman and Margaret.

The Bishop's Transcript for Littleport doesn't show any details of the marriage on 17 April 1785 apart from the names John Murfet and Susanna Vincent.

I really hope its the same John. I don't think I can prove it, but it looks likely to me, unless I find anything to disprove it.

Thanks for the link re the burial in 1830. We press on!

As Soham and Littleport are only 8 miles apart I agree that it's probably him. Unless Langman left a will naming his children, and in particular "John of Littleport", proving it is another matter!

Hi there.

I am now convinced my ancestor James Murfet who married Ann Taylor in 1821 in Soham is the son of John Murfet born 1763 in Soham, and therefore grandson of Langman Murfet. All the bits of the puzzle fit, and I am certain that I have now linked my branch of the Murfets to all the rest, including those who migrated to Australia and New Zealand.

Thanks David and everyone else who helped.

Molly
