Hi
Do you have a Sarah Palmer born 1841ish in Soham?
I have Charles Beckwith born 1838 Soham and thought he may have married a Palmer. Charles and Sarah moved to Marske 1871 census & Liverton 1881 onwards and have a nephew Jonathan D Palmer born 1872? living with them in 1891.
Thanks in anticipation!

Hi Christine - the only Sarah I have who might be close, is one born 1815, died 31 October 1901 in Parramatta, NSW. So it's not likely to be her.

Oh well, it was worth a try!  ;D

I am looking for the parents of James Murfet who is my great, great grandfather. He died in Soham aged 63, buried 3 Jan 1860. That would make his birth 1797. Can anyone help please?

There is a likely candidate born in Stretham 23 April 1797 listed on the IGI as son of William and Elizabeth, but he doesn't appear in any Parish Records of Baptism. I'm stuck!
Please help.

I don't have parents for him either - assuming we are talking about the James MURFET who married Ann TAYLOR.

I'd love to link him into my MURFETs too. His grandson George married into my wider Cambridgeshire tree, but I'd love to know if he fits into my MURFET tree too.

Hi,
Don't know if this is of any help but a James Murfet was baptised 7 Nov 1801 at Fordham, born 12 July. Son of Thomas and Arrabel (nee Westrope).

Tempsford.

Hi Mollystree (and Kazza)

Welcome to Rootschat!

I'm trying to find James in 1851 in order to get his birthplace, but I'm struggling to find him. Can you give us a bit more information about his family, eg names and births of children?

There's a James age 40 in 1841 in Soham, with wife Ann 40, and children James 14, Elizabeth 10, Robert 8; Hannah 5; John 1. Ages over 15 in 1841 were rounded down to the nearest 5 below, so 40 covered an age range of 40-44.

What appears to be the same family was living in Finchley in 1851
James 50 born Littleport Cambs, Ann 49 b Isleden Suffolk, Robert 17; Hannah 14, John 9. All children b Soame (sic) Cambs -transcribed on Ancestry as Seamer!

If this is the right family I'll post full details

This family appears to have baptised a couple of children in Littleport before moving to Soham (Baptism index on http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Search.html ). That it's the same family seems to be confirmed by the baptism of Naomi in Littleport in 1825 and her burial age 1 in Soham in 1826

Littleport parish register hasn't been extracted onto either the IGI or the BVRI, which is perhaps why no-one has found his baptism. However, Littleport baptisms are included on the Cambs FHS baptism index 1801-37 and he's not there. Perhaps he was baptised in 1800.

I can't find an Isleden, Suffolk, but there is an Isleham, Cambs, only a couple of miles from Soham

Thanks Tempsford.

According to a cousin of mine - that James died in 1810 and was buried in Fordham on 27 March - so doesn't seem to be our boy. Oh well - shame because I do know how Thomas and Arrabel fit into my family!

Isleham is right on the Suffolk border and there are parts of the Ecclesiastical parish that are geographically in Suffolk. Doesn't fully explain the entry, but it might be a simple mistake. There are plenty of Murfets (of varying spellings) in the village to this day
E Yorks - Carver, Steels, Cross, Maltby, Whiting, Moor, Laybourn
W Yorks - Wilkinson, Kershaw, Rawnsley, Shaw
Norfolk - Carver, Dowson
Cheshire - Berry, Cooper
Lincs - Berry
London/Ireland/Scotland/Lincs - Sullivan
Northumberland/Durham - Nicholson, Cuthbert, Turner, Robertson
Berks - May
Beds - Brownell

I hadn't bothered to look at 1861 as James died in 1860, but having done so now there is an Ann Murfet 63 widow b Isleham Cambs living alone in Soham. Next door was William Horsley 26 and his wife Hannah 24.

FreeBMD has a marriage in June 1855 in Newmarket registration district (which includes Soham) where William Horsley and Hannah Murfit are on the same page

So it does seem as though these are the same Murfets as were living in Finchley in 1851, and the Isleden is actually Isleham
