Thanks Everyone.
William Horsley and Hannah Murfet were my great grandparents, and the entry for James Murfet and his wife Ann (Taylor) and children in Soham in 1851 is correct.

I haven't found them before that. I didn't know about Naomi (how sad a story!)

Nor had I found any connection to Finchley. Is that Finchley in London or is there another one?

I'd love to solve this mystery, but unless I can find out who put the entry on the IGI for a birth (not baptism) of James in 1797 in Stretham, I wonder if I ever will?

Hi Molly

Give me a few minutes and I'll do a full transcript of the censuses. Glad we found the right family.

I would ignore the Stretham birth on the IGI, at least for the momenty. I think it's probably a red herring. It's a few miles from Littleport, on the opposite side of Ely. You need to be thinking about Littleport parish register, as so far there's no link to Stretham.

Must dash - must pick up my little one from School

Sorry, I too have James and Ann and children in Soham in 1841 but not in 1851, my mistake.

Hi Molly

1851 HO107/1701 folio 382A
Woodside, Finchley, Middlesex
James Muffet head marr 50 Rail lab b Cambridge Littleport
Anne Muffet wife 49 b Suffolk, Isleden
Robert Muffet son 17 b Soame Cambs
Hannah Muffet dau 14 b Soame
John Muffet son 9 b Soame

Littleport bishop's transcripts have been filmed by the LDS. You can order and view the microfiche at your nearest LDS family history centre, or you can go to Cambridge Records Office if that is nearer

Death ages are pretty unreliable, and I would place more faith in the age 50 in 1851.

You've got nothing to link James to Stretham, other than the member submission for the birth fits with his age at death. A recipe for researching someone else's family!!!

Have you found his marriage, allegedly in Soham? Does it give a parish of residence other than Soham?

The burial index on the Cambs FHS site has some Littleport Murfet burials 1801-37, of which one might conceivably be James' father

Thanks David, that's great, assuming you mean James not John aged 50?

Interestingly, the nearest railway line to Woodside, Finchley is the branch of Northern Line heading to High Barnet, but the station that is now called Woodside Park opened as Torrington Park station in 1872, so it isn't likely that James was working on that line.

Still, this is further than I've ever got before and I'm very grateful. All I need to find now are his parents. I have a huge database of Murfets who went to Australia but so far I have no link between my line and theirs. I will soldier on!

Cheers, Molly

Molly,

If you have a look here http://johnnicholsfh.com/f2253.htm#f1520

You'll see what my cousin John Nichols has compiled on the family. It should be of interest!

Cheers

Sorry, definitely James not John in 1851. I have modified my post.

As Littleport baptisms pre 1801 are not online it's going to take someone to check the microfilm in an LDS Family History Centre, or at Cambridge Records Office, or to check the fiche transcription sold by Cambs FHS. Unfortunately there must a lot of fiche as they're a bit pricey.

I know from burials that there were Murfets living in Littleport.

But that's the only way this Murfet line is going to move backwards

The link provided by Karen to an online tree is interesting, although the tree fails to show the first two children of James and Ann who were baptised in Littleport. Whilst Naomi died in Soham, their eldest son, William, appears in censuses

Many thanks David and Karen. Enough there to keep me going! I went to Cambridge Records Office the other day but didn't look at Littleport records, so it looks as though I'll be going again! I'm away for the next few days so won't be on line, but I'll keep you posted with anything I find in a week or two.
Goodnight, and thank you,
Molly

I just got home from the LDS Family Records Centre in London, and I finally found my great great grandfather James Murfet!!!

I looked at the Bishop's Transcripts for Littleport, on film, and there he was, baptised
9 August 1799, son of John and Susanna Murfitt. They had three other sons, William, 1786, Robert, 1789, and Thomas, 1790. There may have been other children but the record is not complete, a number of pages are unreadable.

John and Susanna married in Littleport 17 April 1785 and her maiden name was Vincent. She was baptised 15 September 1765, daughter of John and Elizabeth.

I couldn't find John Murfitt's baptism nor any marriages or baptisms of Murfitts before 1785, so perhaps he came from somewhere else. Nor could I find John Vincent's marriage to Elizabeth, but as I said, the records are not complete.

I think I did rather well, thanks to David telling me about the Littleport connection.

Time for tea now!
Molly
