Passenger list SS Steel Fabricator
« on: Friday 07 June 13 07:18 BST (UK) »
The cargo ship SS Steel Fabricator arrived in Savannah Georgia, in November of 1950. As well as general cargo, it carried several passengers. I have searched a few US sites for the manifest/passenger list, but to date have come up with zilch!

One of the passengers was  a Derek Lonnaux, who came from India. I already have a copy of his Petition for Naturalization.

Any  look up, or advice on where I can access that passenger list, would be appreciated.

Thanks Sandra,
I've discovered that the ship frequently sailed between India and the US, taking on and dropping off cargo at a selection of ports en route. It had room for 12 passengers, but was not air conditioned.

Somewhere out there,  that passenger list is doing its best to avoid capture!   ;D

I've seen airline manifests from the 1950s on An***try. Perhaps you might search there for arrivals at Savanna, Georgia in 1950. That's where passengers would have been processed through immigration. Unless the ship made intermediate stops in other American ports on the way to Savannah and disembarked in, say, New York.

The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration branch in Atlanta holds records for Savannah. You can e-mail a query about the SS Steel Fabricator, with names and dates, to atlanta.archives@nara.gov. You might get a quick reply (a few days) or a slow reply (a few weeks)...or a very slow reply(!). That's been my experience. But I usually pick up the telephone and call, which may not be an option for you.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the link, John, I'll give it a go.
I know from experience how convoluted a process it can be obtaining documents from federal and state sources in the US of A.

Hi Katman: I was going to suggest that you telephone the National Archives branch, thinking that you were in the UK of GB and NI. Then I saw from your profile that you are not there, and a telephone call from where you are would be expensive and inconvenient, time-wise. So you're stuck with e-mail. And don't forget that July 4th is the birthday of the US of A. So any e-mail you send will languish over the weekend while folks are shooting off fireworks and stuffing themselves with bar-b-qued this and that.
