Pitman in Somerset & Gloucester
« on: Saturday 11 June 05 04:28 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information available on the family of Silas and Hannah Pitman nee Pursey.
There were 3 children, Frank, Eli and Emma.
On the 1881 census Eli, 23, was living in Bristol, Gloucester and was married to Emily ?  they had one daughter Alice, no sign of them on the 1891 census, but I think Eli may have died. Frank, in 1881 was at Keinton Mandeviille ,26,married to Emma and had Maud, Helena, and Ethel. He was still there in 1901. Emily married James Batt and was also in Keinton Mandeville, Emily was 48 in 1901, they had one daughter, Lilian ,20 in 1901 and was a teacher of music.
If anyone can recongise any names, would like to hear from them .Twiggy

No sign of him in the 1871 census either.
There are 2 Silas Pitmans in the S.W.
One in Tarrant Dorset, b c 1863
One in Hallatrow Somerset, b c 1865 in High Littleton

I have found a Silas Pitman married in Bristol September Quarter 1875, a birth c 1866 in Clutton Somerset and a birth c 1830 in Bridgewater.

None of these seem to match unless perhaps some of your information is inaccurate.

Sorry I cant be more help.

Good luck in your search.

The 1861 census gives Eli Pitman as born 1858, living at Main Street Walton as a boarder.

Alfred Hedges  Head  aged 36  Stone Cutter  b Charlton Adam
Elizabeth Hedhes  Wife  aged 31  Shoe binder  b Walton
Eli Pitman  Boarder  aged 3  b Walton

Also another couple of lodgers, but no obvious connection. Not much help with his parents though! do you have Silas parents?

There were three other Pitman families living at Walton, one is Headed by Silas Pitman aged 31 years a widower,

Main Street Walton
Silas Pitman  Head  aged 34  Widower  Stone Cutter  b Walton
Emily Pitman  daughter  aged 8  b Walton
Frank Pitman  son  aged 6  b Walton

The other houses are headed by William b 1824 and wife Aquilla and Henry born 1834 and wife Mary, both William and Henry were born in Walton.

There was an Eli Pitman died Sept Q 1888 in the Bristol area aged 31 years, so this could be your Eli.

Hi Heather,
Many thanks for the info, it is more than I had, so I now know where they were in 1861. I had an idea Eli must have died before 1891 but wasn't sure, now I have that information too, I don't know what happened to his wife and daughter, perhaps she remarried, I don't know, I will try and hunt her down.

Hi Twiggy

Went to the records office today, not sure if you already have this info but only took a couple of minutes to find

Eli Pitman was baptised at Walton on the 27 August 1857, it was a private baptism. His parents were Silas and Hannah Pitman, Silas was a stone cutter.

Hannah Pitman was buried at Walton on the 7 June 1858 aged 24 years.

Hi Heather,
Your information has been very gratefully received, Thank you so much.
I knew Hannah must have died as Silas was listed as a widower in 1861, Eli , on the 1861 who was 3 and a boarder was there with his grandfather Francis Pursey, I would say all the Pitmans from Walton would be related in some way.

Many thanks again Twiggy

Frank P Pitman was married to Emma roberts (1849-1919).He then married Flo Chalker (1865-1922) and then he married Lucy Saunders (1851-1947).  Chalker, Saunders and Pitman are all Keinton Mandeville names.
Emma Roberts was the Grand daughter of my Great grandfather Samuel J Matcham. Mostly stonemasons or quarry workers and mostly Methodists.I have got records of the childrens marriages and descendants if you would like them. I am interested  in keinton mandeville names of Matcham Cox  Coates Paul Brabner Cook and Harris.
hope this is of some help.

Dear Tracy,
Many thanks for your letter. The children I have for Frank and Emma are Maud, Nellie, Ethel, Annie and Wilfred, Is that correct? I got them from the 1891 census. I would be really thrilled to get any information I can on the family. What have you got on Frank? His mother was Hannah Pursey and his father Silas, I can give you quite a bit on the Pursey line, not that much on the Pitman side but am working on it. Frank had a sister Emily who married James Batt. Their mother had a sister Sarah Pursey who was my gr gr grandmother.
Hope to hear many thanks Twiggy

Yes the children you listed are the same as my list.I am getting most of this info from a distant relative who gave me what he had of a family tree, but so far every bit of info on it has turned out to be correct. The name Pitman appears in other parts of the family tree as a middle name leading me to think that it had been around in the village of Keinton Mandeville for a while.I have a James Pitman Matcham.Maud Pitman (1875-1938)married B H Brook (1971-1956).They had R B Brook(1900-1949) and he married L Payne born 1906 and then seems to have married O Cox born 1901 but no death date for the first one so was it divorce.Maud also had IF Brook and N C Brook.anyway L B Brook(1929) was a son born to R B Brook. He married Mary Quick (b. 1934) and they had 2 children Paul Brook in 1961 and Jane Brook in 1963.Gonna have to send this to you and do the rest later as dont know how to save it.
