St Woollos Cemetery (Newport, Wales) - ISAAC and JANE GRAVES
« on: Friday 07 June 13 01:35 BST (UK) »
I have ancestors who lived and died in Newport, Wales. I strongly suspect they are buried in the St Woollos cemetery. I was hoping someone would be so kind as to confirm if/where they are buried. Pictures of the graves would be fantastic, but not necessary.

Here is what I know about them:
ISAAC GRAVES -- B:abt 1816; D: 1871-1881
his wife JANE GRAVES (BRACEY) -- B: abt 1816, D: likely 1866

Some of their children may also be buried there, but I haven't yet found their years of death:
ISAAC B GRAVES -- b:abt 1840
WILLIAM GRAVES -- b:abt 1845
MARY J GRAVES -- b: abt 1847

Thanks so much

Hi and welcome to Rootschat, it looks like at least Issac snr was buried at St Woolos:-

Burial St Woolos 18th March 1875 Isaac Graves Abode S Paul aged 58

I followed young Issac through the census, and this looks to be his death:-

Thanks so much for this.

I also followed Isaac jr's records this afternoon and found the same death record. It's nice to have a confirmation of these findings.

As for the burial date of Isaac snr, did you get this from the burial records? Do happen to know where in the cemetery he is buried?

Thanks again for your help Keyboard86.

HI was Mary J Graves a Mary Jemima who married an Alexander Fulham Payton in Dec qtr 1868 when both appear to disappear by 1891?

The marriage was on the 21st December 1868 Newport St Paul, Mary aged 22

Also I could not locate a birth for Mary J?

The burial record for Isaac was taken from the original parish record.

Ok can now see by searching for William b c 1845 that the marriage above looks good, as in 1881/91/01an Arthur L Parsons b c 1872 is shown as Nephew with William and Phillis (nee Hammett) Graves and family, in 1891Arthur b Newport in 1881 b Christchurch Mon.
Census refs 1881 RG11/5265/47/11 1891 RG12/4376/1830 1901 RG13/4958/11/13
So what happened to parents post 1871 Alexander and post 1881 Mary?

Following William back he died Dec qtr 1929 Newport M 11a 189 aged 85

Arthur Lawrence Parsons married a Frances Lily McGregor or Mary Ann Knibbs Sept qtr 1901 Newport M 11a 420
More than likely Frances Lily, as living next door in 1901, is a Lillie McGregor b 1876 Newport, who in 1881 is a Francis aged 5

It looks like Mary Jemima's husband died in 1872. I too haven't been able to find her in the census records past 1881. I don't have a birth record for her either, just an estimate based on census data.

HI have you found the son Arthur Lawrence Parsons and wife in 1911? If not it may be worth starting a new thread, with ref to this one enquiring as to there whereabouts since the marriage, and also Arthur's mother Mary J?

Hi etrotte!

Have found this marriage on FreeBMD:

Mary Jemima Graves and Alexander Fulham PARSONS, not Payton, December qtr 1868. I assume this is the one you mean Keyboard86 (?) as you have Arthur Parsons, it is just a typo! Confused me!!  ???

Alexander Fulham Parsons dies March qtr 1872 aged 24, in Newport.

Have a marriage between Mary Jemima Parsons and Robert Pugh or John Baker, June qtr 1878, Newport (11a 221).

I am assuming she married Robert Pugh, as Mary Jemima Pugh dies in March qtr 1904, aged 58, in Newport (11a 159) - which would be about the right age! Sorry, can't check the census records myself, but I'm sure someone will . . .  ;)

As for St Woollos Cemetary, I also have quite a few relatives buried there. I was going to suggest just contacting the cemetary as I have before and they have been really helpful. However I checked their website (as it was over 10 years ago), and they are now charging £10 for a 30 minute search.  :(  So hopefully someone will be closer to look for you.
