Obituary or Funeral notice for someone living in Cheetham in 1951

Hi all,

My greatgrandfather, William (Henry) McLoughlin died at Crumpsall Hospital on 22nd September 1951 and was cremated at Manchester Southern Cemetery a few days later.

As he was involved in politics (both earlier in Dublin and then Manchester) then it seems possible that there might have been some sort of notice of the death and perhaps a report of the funeral.  Can anyone tell me what newspapers were likely to have reported this type of event at the time and if they are available on-line for those dates, and where?

The death might also have been reported in socialist newspapers.  Does anyone know which particular papers would have been issued around that time?

Even better if anyone could give me a reference to any specific on-line reports available.

Otherwise, where would be the best place to look up the (local or socialist) papers for those dates, though it may be some time before I could get to do that?

I've tried the Guardian archive (then the Manchester Guardian) for September & October 1951, but didn't get any result - given the site uses OCR software & the potential for misspelling of the name it may be there, but not picked up.

The Manchester Evening News is the regional paper that's still going (it was owned by the Guardian at one time - don't know about 1951). There's a list of local papers held by Manchester Libraries:

I'm the other side of the area, so not familiar with what would be most likely.

I read it, but I am not sure how long it has been published for ,
it was I believe known as the Daily Worker in 1930,

The Manchester 24-hour Library sounds very useful but a lot of newspapers to look up.  I'm guessing the site is safe but I get a security warning from my antivirus software when I click on it.

Does anyone know if you need to have a local address to join it?

Didn't know about the People's History Museum.  That certainly looks worth a visit if I can manage it.

Dudley - I've visited & found the displays interesting - when I went they'd several banners on show & you could also see the area where others were being restored, as well as the regular collection. Given you have a personal interest I hope you spotted the section about their archives (appointments needed) - I've no personal experience there. It's been a while but the cafe was good!

It was the archives that are particularly appealing to me.  I can see that I need to organise a family history trip to Manchester some time soon.
