Birth of Hannah (Holdan) Moiser 1836 in Yarm
« on: Sunday 02 June 13 09:41 BST (UK) »
Could anyone check for me whether there is a birth or baptism registered for Hannah Moiser in 1836 or thereabouts in Yarm. She was illegitimate daughter of Sarah Moiser (b Huntington, York 1795) and it is unclear whether her middle name was Holdan/Holdam or Holmes.  I suspect the middle name refers to the father, so if that rings a bell with anyone that would also be great.

Many thanks

I can't see the original but if it helps her marriage has the middle name as Holmes.

The 1851 census entry also looks like Holmes.

1861 doesn't show a middle name.

To elaborate on Millie's post :

Marriage, 30th June 1862
William Brown, aged 28
Father : Jonathan Brown
Spouse :
Hannah Holmes Moiser, aged 26
Saint Laurence, York

And their marriage registration :

Marriage, Jun qtr 1862
Hannah Holmes Moiser
York, Vol 9d, page 45

What gave you reason to believe it might have been Holdan/Holdam ?

Kind regards,

Pels.

Thanks - but I have those details, it is her birth I was particularly after.  Something slightly strange about it as although in the census' prior to 1891 she gives her birth at Yarm, in 1891 and 1901 she states she was born in New York, USA, so I am trying to eliminate possibilities!
I have a copy of her mother's will which refers to her as Hannah Holdam Moiser, so which is correct I know not.

I see that puts a different spin on it!

Do any of Hannah's children have unusual middle names?

What date was the will?  Is it written really clearly as Holdam?

Sorry I can't see those later census where she puts born New York - where was she living at the time?

Hi in 1891 has Hannah re-married to an Edward Bickerdike March qtr 1885 York 9d 33?

In 1891 York Hannah Bickerdike aged 55 b New York America
Census Ref RG12/3892/41/27

So begs the question, how do you know (if this is her) that it is the same Hannah?

Yes, she did remarry. I know this from the family bible! My great grandfather wrote in it the date of his mother's death and listed her as Hannah Bickerdike.  Her first husband William died in 1873 we think (not in bible).

No, none of the children have unusual middle names, though my great grandfather made a mysterious trip to New York in the early years of the last century - the family tradition being that it was something to do with his mother but this is totally unsupported by evidence.

Her mother, Sarah's will is dated 17 Jan 1850 and Hannah is clearly referred to as Hannah Holdan Moiser (sorry, not Holdam got that wrong).
