June 21

In 1894 my Great Aunt Marion Eileen Josephine Whitney was born in Shanghai China, the youngest child of Frederick Williams Whitney and Josephine Watson. The family returned to England after the death of her father two years later. She married Maurice Leonard Applin and died in 1974 at the age of 79.

In 1941 my 1st cousin once removed Margaret "Peggy" White married Eric John Ketteringham in Wolverhampton

John Bradley married Mary Sharples 21 jun 1823 at Church Kirk, Lancs. He belonged to the branch of Broadleys descended from Jonas Broadley (1698-1770) who changed their names to Bradley but John seems to have had more trouble than most in doing so. On the 1841 census he appears as Broadley and when he was buried his name was written as Broadley, with the o then crossed out. He was a calico printer, as so many were at that time. Several of his children died young and I have so far found only one daughter having children.
Broadley (Lancs all dates and Halifax bef 1654)

On 21st June 1746 Rev Jonathan Catlow died in Ashton under Lyne, my 5 x great grandfather
Born in September 1704 to Samuel Catlow and Sarah Moon as a quaker in Colne in Lancashire, he had an adult baptism in Colne in 1721
In 1724 he was appointed the Schoolmaster of Ashton Under Lyne, which required that he be ordained. He was ordained, also become curate of Ashton, and in 1727 married Grace Smith nee Pickford (of the Macclesfield Pickford family) They had 7 children.
Jonathan secured the lease of Ashton Old Hall and the school was based there.
After Jonathans death Grace married a third time to Thomas Kirkbride who was probably also a priest

Only 3 today.

22 June
Elizabeth (Betty) Whittaker (nee Moors) my husband’s 2 x g.grandmother was baptised at Marple, Cheshire in 1811

Thomas Benson my 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised at St Cuthbert’s Church, Aldingham, Lancashire in 1790

John Stanton my 3 x g.grandfather died in Back Lane, Newton, Cheshire in 1845 oops 1841 aged 44.  The cause of his death was pulmonary consumption.  The family, consisting of his wife and 8 children moved to Cheshire from Lincolnshire sometime prior to 1841, presumably to find work on the railways, his occupation at the time of his death was Railway Agent.  Following his death, the family moved back home to Lincolnshire where his wife lived until her death aged 90.

On 21st June 1941 my great great grandfather Robert McEwan died in Bicknell, Indiana, where he was buried 3 days later beside his second wife. He was born Robert McKeown on 10th August 1865 in Coalisland, County Tyrone. Some census records in Scotland and the USA have his birth as Scotland but his obituary proved what I had long suspected was his birth.
I'm not sure how I feel about Robert, he cleared off leaving my GG grandmother Hannah with 4 children and one on the way. Then again I am fairly sure that this 5th child wasn't Robert's, so I really have no idea who was to blame for the marriage break up. I tend to come down on Hannah's side as she reared the children. I do know that on his second marriage certificate, he falsely declared himself a widower.
Below is a piece about him from an American newspaper. Some bits are misleading or plain wrong. For instance it mentions the 'English engaged (as in battle), just them was it  ???. Also the reatreat from Mona should read Mons and the Mrs. McEwan mentioned was not the mother of either of the boys mentioned, their mother was my GG gran Hannah, who having reared them and watched them march off I would think, had far more reason to grieve.

On 22nd June 1883 my grandfather John Thomas Richardson was born in Hartlepool, his parents were William John Richardson and Theresa Hetherington.

He married Henrietta Briggs on 1st January 1914 @ Stockton on Tees and died of pneumonia aged just 31 years on 15th January 1915 the day after his only child (my mother) was born. Sadly  Henrietta died 3 days later also of pneumonia aged just 27 years so my mother was an orphan.

Trying to find out about my grandparents got me interested in family history and has given me a lot of pleasure (and a little frustration) over the recent years. So thanks granddad and happy birthday.
