On 16 June 1864 my 2 x great great uncle John Conquest died in Kempston, Bedfordshire.  He was a builder, employing two men according to the 1861 census.  My great grandfather William Conquest was one of the executors of his will.

Hi nanny jan, I've just read up on that sinking. More lives lost than the Titanic and Lusitania put together, yet nowhere near as well known. Probably due to government cover up at the time I suppose.

Two baptisms today.

On 17th June 1798 William Ross was baptized in Colinton. He had been born on the 1st June in Craiglockhart, where all his siblings were born. William was the youngest child of my 5xG grandparents Peter Ross and Agnes Mason. His sister Susanna was my 4xG grandmother.

On 17th June 1832 my great great grandmother Elizabeth Peat (Pate) was baptized in Linlithgow, having been born on the 14th. She was the youngest daughter of my 3xG grandparents John Peat and Isabella Scott.

On 17 June
Mary Hannah Cockett (nee Hobson) my maternal gran was born in Manchester in 1877.  As I knew her date of birth I've never actually bought her birth certificate to see exactly where she was born.

Elsie Cockett my aunt and first child of my gran Mary Hannah was born at 25 Croft Street, Newton, Manchester in 1896 on my gran’s 19th birthday and exactly 3 months after her marriage.

Charles Hugh Dawson my husband’s g.uncle was born in Hulme, Manchester in 1870

Mary Millington (nee Brand) my 2nd cousin once removed died in Manchester in 1996

On 18th June 1892 my grandmother, Beatrice beryl Booth was born in Horsham, Victoria, where her father was a probation officer. She was the youngest of 7 children.

She grew up with out her father who died when she was just three - some say of shame because he'd lost all in the great bank crash of that time - He was a governor of the bank at a time when governors were responsible for the bank's debts- (so I've been told)   He lost his engineering business (designing and making harrows)

She was a good cook and jam, pickles and chutney maker and I'd like to think I am keeping up the tradition.

On 18th June 1866, my 3xG grandfather James Steen married for the second time in Linlithgow. James was still a tanner at the time and his bride Margaret White is described as a spinster. Whether this was true, I don't know, she was certainly liberal with her age. It doesn't appear to have been a happy match as by the next census they are living apart. Strangely, his youngest son Henry appears as a witness, when I don't think he was happy with the marriage. He took himself off and joined the army, serving for 20 years and dying on the Isle of Wight.
This was to me however a very fortuitous marriage as the certificate is the only document that tells me who his parents were, Janet Auld and another James Steen, a miller.
