My Dad would have been 101 today. He died at 11.00am on 11th November so it's easy to remember his anniversary. He served his apprenticship as a Hairdresser therefore gaining the nickname "Sweeney" although he had another from his time in the army WW2, where he was in the artillery and also picked up "Gunner".

The family are not so sure it was from the army and always assumed it was from his passion of always putting of til tommorrow what could be done today...IE Gunna.

On this day in 1770, Nancy Bowker my 3 x great grandmother was baptised at St Michael's Ashton Under Lyne (She may have been born at Haughton)

She was daughter of George Bowker a cordwainer and Mary Shepley from Glossop

Nancy Married James Cock in 1789 at St Mary's Stockport - he was mostly decribed as a weaver

They had 11 children
James died in 1838 at Denton. He clearly wrote a will, there is a death duty record and an act book entry but the will is elusive

Nancy died in 1852 in Denton, they were both buried there at St Lawrence's

Two births today:

My gt. uncle Francis Barham born in Bunhill Row, London in 1871;  son of George William and Elizabeth Mary Ann (nee Burgess). He was baptised a month later at St. Thomas Charterhouse but  died 3 months later.

A 1st cousin 3R, John Robert Pain, born in 1860 in Woolwich;  son of John Hutcheson and Mary Ann (nee Allen). Of course it does. Happy Birthday to you! :D

7th June 1731, my 6 x great-grandparents, Ralph Littlefair and Elizabeth Etherington were married in Cockfield, Co. Durham.

1855 - my 4 x great aunt Isabella Alexander - nee Hay) died in Cruden. I hesitate to rejoice at her death but Scottish records were so informative for deaths that year. I have all the names of her children as well as her parents and her husband from the certificate. Shame it didn't last.

On 8th June 1751 my 5xG grandparents John Wardlaw and Barbara Smith gave up their names for proclamation to be married. They lived in the parish of Kirknewton and East Calder. John was a weaver at Leithead which now seems to be little more than a collection of farm buildings. Barbara was from Newlands, a few fields away and which still exists. Like many of the infuriating Kirknewton records of the time, mother's are rarely mentioned, even on baptisms. I know John's father was another John and grandfather very likely a George and Barbara's was Rodger Smith of whom I know nothing apart from he was my 6xG grandfather. I share a birthday with their youngest child, my 4xG grandfather.

John Lee my great great grandfather was buried today in Tintwistle, Cheshire in 1878, after dying in Hadfield, Derbyshire.
He was born in 1810 in Upper Bridge Upperthong (Homlfirth) to George Lee, a shoemaker and Ann Whitehead. He became a shoemaker himself though seemed to prefer the grander description of
Cordwainer.

In 1833 he married Mary Cook at Holmfirth. He and Mary had 6 daughters though the second died at 15.
In 1850 Mary died in childbirth, it is clear this child did not live either
In 1851 They are all at home in Upperthong.
By 1861 they all moved to Glossop, Derbyshire, apart from his oldest daughter who stayed behind to marry. In Derbyshire he has a new wife Ann, who I have not been able to track down. The 1861 census gives her occupation as sick in bed! Ann died not long after

All John's daughter married off, and he died at 68 as above
