On 5 June
In 1876 my husband's grandmother, Gertrude Elizabeth January, mentioned yesterday, was born at Hauxton, Cambridgeshire.  She was the daughter of John January and Emma Bangle.

Joseph Peppercorn, my 1st cousin 2 x removed, married his first wife, Jane Hassall, in 1892 at St James the Apostle Church, Islington, London.

Louisa Florence Conquest, my 1st cousin 1 x removed, married Oliver George Mew in 1921 at Southwark, London.

On this day in 1879, George Jackson my great great grandfather died aged only 48 at Carlton near Barnsley. He died from Bright's disease, which is a kidney problem with protein in the blood - does not exactly equate to one modern condition.

George was born in 1831 in Macclesfield, Cheshire, son of a coal miner Edward Jackson, who later became a provision dealer.  In 1841 he was living at an Aunt's family house in Derbyshire (Aunt though was absent.

He married Sally Booth in 1850 at St Mary's Stockport  and in 1851 they were living in Marple. He was already working in the coal mines at this stage.
In 1861 he had moved across to Dodworth near Barnsley in Yorkshire and was coal viewer - I suspect he was undermanager at this stage. Sally and the family soon joined him and together they had 9 children though the first 4 died young. Sally died in 1872 of an obstructed bowel, and George remarried an Ann, I have no idea who she was, born in Cheshire he may have married in either county. Then George got an exciting new job and they moved to Carlton also near Barnsley. George commenced the management of construction of a new mine on Lord Wharncliffe's land , known as Wharncliffe Woodmoor mine. It was also known as Carlton main, and operated until the 1960s.

It may not have been the best time to start a new mine as coal prices dropped, but with George's sudden death, in 1881 just the youngest girl was left at home with Ann, her stepmother.

George was buried with Sally at the Church in Dodworth,

Pictures - George, his grave and all that is left of the mine, a memorial to a later disaster

On 6 June
Ethelinda Cockett (nee Wheeldon ) my aunt known as Auntie Linda was born in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire, in 1909 and was married to my mother’s brother.  In later years she lived in Blackpool and I remember visiting her with my boyfriend (now husband) when I was about 20.  She decided I looked “peaky” and promptly gave me some Tonic Wine.  I didn’t realise it was alcoholic – and quite strong at that 15% and as I’d never drunk any alcohol before,   I certainly wasn’t “peaky” after that.  ::)  ::)

Joseph Pemberton my 3 x g.g.uncle was  baptised at St Oswald’s Church, Lower Peover, Cheshire in 1784

Lettice (Letitia) Stanton my 1st cousin 5 ties removed was baptised at St Nicholas Church, Skirbeck, Boston, Lincolnshire in 1810.  Oddly, Lettice and her sister Leonora and brother Edwin Hammond Stanton appear to have been baptised twice once in Skirbeck, (Edwin originally baptised in New Sleaford and the second time on 19 September 1813 in Sempringham when a younger brother was baptised

John Baxter my 5 x g.g.uncle was baptised at St Andrew’s Church, Heckington, Lincolnshire in 1750

Ann Sharp my 1st cousin 4 times removed was baptised at St Botolph’s Church, Boston, Lincolnshire in 1837

Hannah Middleton my 3 x g.g.aunt was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Millom, Cumberland in 1820

William Brand my 2 x g.g.uncle was buried at St Denys Parish Church, Sleaford, Lincolnshire in 1824.  He was the 2nd son to be called William, the first William was buried aged 2 days, this 2nd William was 10 when he was buried, and the 3rd William born in 1825 became my 2 x g.grandfather.

I have Catlows = some were from Denton, but originated from Ashton under Lyne, back to Jonathan Catlow, curate and schoolmaster of Ashton under Lyne, it seems though that he came from Colne

My husband seems to be connected to some other Catlows, including a Walter Catlow born about 1850 who married his 2 x g.g.aunt Jane Lees.  I've not researched Walter and I don't think he's connected to the other Catlow mentioned yesterday.

I was going to leave this till later but might not be in, so better chuck them up now.

On 6 June 1884 Hugh Wright was born at Redford, Muiravonside, the first of four children of my great grandmother Elizabeth by her first husband Robert Wright. He would be followed by Elizabeth, John and Robina before Robert died just six years later from pneumonia. Elizabeth remarried several years later, producing one child from this marriage. This child, a daughter would grow up with a different surname to that of her four half siblings. In between these marriages was born, illigitimately, my grandfather, who would have his mother's maiden name as a surname. I know all about Robert Wright's line, thanks to a great grandson of his brother John. I have tracked, thanks to help from MonicaL, the family of her second husband from a large farm estate in Ireland, as far as the USA and goldfields of Australia. However, my grandfather's paternal lineage, I am afraid will remain a mystery that leaves a gaping hole in my research. No father is mentioned on his birth, marriage or death certificates and until I revealed all, not even my mother knew he was illigitimate. Only a seance it appears will reveal the truth.

On 6 June 1910, Jane Heeps Lawson was born in Crosscroes, Muiravonside, the second of three children born to my GG grandmother Hannah and her second husband John Lawson. This John is proving hard to track but it looks like his parents were from Cumberland. Only last week, with some great sleuthing from Gadget, I discovered that he committed suicide when his daughter Jane was just 21.

On 6 June 1840 my great great grandfather Peter Wardlaw was baptized in Whitburn. He had been born on 29 April, the eldest of four children of George Wardlaw and Agnes Torrance. If he had been born just three days earlier he would have shared the birthday of both his grandfather and myself, his great great grandson.

On 6 June 1890, my great grandparents George Wardlaw and Agnes Tweedie married in Armadale. The witnesses were the bride's sister Elizabeth and her maternal uncle William. I think he may have been standing in for her father who was deceased at the time of this marriage. George was the eldest child of the above Peter and his wife Janet Brown and was born just four months after their marriage, meaning his mother was already well pregnant or this was a record breaking short pregnancy. Agnes was the daughter of John Tweedie and Rachel Brown (no relation to the above Janet) and like all but one of her siblings was born in Bathgate. The only exception being her eldest sister Elizabeth, who was born in Fife.
George and Agnes would have a long marriage and produce five daughter's, one of whom was my grandmother and one son. This one son, Peter died young following injuries received in a mining accident and is buried with his parents. Their eldest child Rachel also died young and her daughters were brought up by George and Agnes in the village (in my avatar) and on the very street where years later I would be born.

Photos are of Hugh Wright and his younger brother John and the grave of my great grandparents and Peter Wardlaw their only son.

George Broadley was born 6 jun 1865 in Habergham Eaves and was buried 2 jan 1866, 7 months old in Burnley Cemetery, of Healey Wood. His parents were James Broadley, carter and Ann Turner. James was actually baptized as a Catholic, but his children were brought up Anglican. There were eight children but at least 3, including George, died in a few months between Sept 1865 and Jan 1866.

Grace Broadley was born 6 jun 1868 in Clayton le Moors. Her father Peter was a fireman in the mine at Altham and was one of the few to escape the Moorfields Pit disaster of 1883. Grace's parents, Peter and Grace, had 6 children. Three died as infants and one aged 10. The only other child who survived, George Edward (Teddy) Broadley, had a career as a cricketer. He was a fast bowler. He is mentioned in local papers and in 1899 Norden Cricket Club, Norden, Rochdale, engaged him as a professional. The club won their first championship in The Middletons and District League. In later life, George Edward ran a pub in Manchester.

I've been away again so I missed yesterday's people. I'll just mention that on June 5th, 1925, my great uncle Joseph Milne Raitt, married Nettie Wills in Aberdeen. They had one daughter, Pat. A couple of years ago, I made contact with her and had hoped that we would meet one day. Sadly, that didn't happen as she became ill with cancer and died last year. But I have met one of her sons and his family. It turns out that Pat and her husband lived for some time in a village very close to where I am now so her son was in the area, visiting the his birthplace. ( the same village from which my daughter ran her 10k last week).

Today, June 6th
1717, Dorothea Lonsdale, 1st cousin x 5, born in Spennithorne
1786, Lydia Favell, 5 x great aunt was baptised in Spennithorne
1821, Maria Grose, 1st cousin x 5, was born in Portsea.
1824, Margaret Smith, 2 x great grandmother, was baptised in Nairn, daughter of William Smith and Margaret Forsyth.

Although i have this event down as a birth, I suspect it is actually a baptism:
In 1667, my 7 x Great Grandmother Sarah Drake was born in Aylesbeare, Devon. She was the eldest daughter of George & Mary Drake. She married John Walrond and they had nine children.

In 1775, my 2nd Cousin 5 times removed Emma Trant Spry was baptised in West Lavington Wiltshire. She was the daughter of James Hume Spry & Emma Trant

In 1790, my 4 x Great Uncle Thomas Jenkins Whitney was baptised at Kington Herefordshire. He was the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Whitney

In 1811, my 4 x Great Aunt Ann Carter was christened at Aylesbeare Devon. She was the youngest child of Thomas Carter & Elizabeth Coplestone and married Frederick Walker

In 1860, Phoebe Smith, wife of my 4 x Great Uncle Samuel Levi was buried at Diss, Norfolk. She was 79 yrs old.
