psychiatric hospitals in Warrington
« on: Friday 31 May 13 14:24 BST (UK) »
Hi,
One of my relatives was a patient in a psychiatric hospital in Warrington during the 1950's/60's.  Has anybody any ideas of the names of hospitals around this era?
many thanks

Probably Winwick Hospital, now a housing estate.

Lots of references to it on Google, etc.

Hollins Park?
Winwick?
St Mary's?
Oakdene?

thanks for the replies, I'm totally unfamiliar with Warrington.  My relative was female and was a long term patient dying around 1963 -1965.  The only likely death registration i can find is newton le Willows; does this seem a possibilty in terms of the locations of these hospitals?
many thanks  :)

Newton-le-Willows, or Newton-in-Makerfield as it used to be known, is a parish within the Warrington Registration District.

Hollins Park is still open (but rebuilt) on the Winwick site.

Oakdene is in Rainhill, about 8 miles away and classed as St Helens RD.

I would agree with the N-Le-W registration being the one in which you are interested

Hi Jo1962
Try this web site
sthelens.gov.uk (and look for cemetery records)
they have some details on Newton-le-Willows Cemetery which may be of use to you.
