Searching for a good copy of R Thornton’s 1824 map of Stockport

I am trying to find a high resolution copy of R Thornton’s 1824 map of Stockport.  I’ve searched online without any luck. The nearest I’ve got to what I want is scanning a copy of the map from the inside front cover of Morris Garratt’s “Stockport, A History”, but I have a line down the middle of the scan where the pages meet and the overall quality isn’t quite as good as I would like.

Anyone got any ideas about where I could find the map?

I’m looking at how an area of Stockport became industrialised over a few decades when my ancestors lived there, which is why I am trying to get the 1824 map.  The link you gave, though, is proving useful for other research I’m doing – I didn’t know the site and it has kept me occupied for the past hour or so!

I also saw the 1824 map for sale, but on a different site for a mere £100! Bargain!

If you're willing to spend a bit of money and maybe wait a while then one of the university libraries might be able to supply a scanned image. You could search www.copac.ac.uk for the Thornton map, and then check the websites of any holding libraries to see what services they provide. Eg Manchester Uni Library holds a copy (reference only, no loans). You can search their library catalogue direct for it here http://catalogue.library.manchester.ac.uk/. I don't find the MUL website that easy to navigate, but you can find info about ordering images here

They also have an online collection of images called LUNA here http://www.library.manchester.ac.uk/searchresources/imagecollections/. I searched there for Thornton Stockport with no luck, but was presented in the search results with some interesting maps of Manchester, Salford, etc nonetheless.

I have this map, bought it for 10 pence some years ago.
If I had known how much it would be worth in years to come I would have taken much more care of it.
After reading your post yesterday Ramsin, I scanned it onto my computer but it had to be in two halves and even though it wasn't bad the file was to big for me to attach to a post. I did re size it but lost to much of the detail.
This morning I took it to a friend of mine who I thought would be able to help. He's just emailed me the result in a PDF file. So if you would like a copy just PM me your email address and I'll send it to you.

Ramsin - pleased the Cheshire maps site was of interest. I can browse in there for hours too!

The British History Online site has some 1840s maps (rather small images):

That site also has various volumes of the Victoria County History series, some of which have sections of old maps. There is this (no maps):

Some parts (eg Heaton Norris) are in the Lancashire section.
