Birthplace of Ancestor living in Framlingham
« on: Sunday 26 May 13 21:03 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am trying to work out where two of my ancestors were born from the 1851 census. Their names are Henry and Jane Chandler. They are living in Hermitage Place, Framlingham with their children, the eldest on this census is Robert.

Can anyone help decipher these two places of birth? I have no knowledge of Suffolk whatsoever as I am from Leicestershire. So if you could give me a vague idea of where they are, this would also help!

Kind regards

Sam

Hoxne and Laxfield are about 8 miles from each other and not far from Eye.

Hoxne is pronounced as Hoxen. That's Suffolk for you !!

We had a friend who lived at The Hermitage, will investigate further to find Hermitage Place, but in later census the family appear to live in Double Street.  This is a crescent shaped street (originally called Bow Street). It was the most fashionable street in the town and had many shops. It stillhas many very old buildings, behind the smart facades added in later years, are houses built in the 1600s.

Pat ...
Every time I find an ancestor,
I have to find two more!

SUFFOLK - Pendle, Stygall, Pipe, Fruer, Bridges, Fisk, Bellamy, Sparham - all link to  Framlingham
DERBY - Bridges and Frost (originally Framlingham/Parham)
NOTTINGHAM - Lambert & Selby
BERKSHIRE/then Hammersmith LDN - Fulker
LDN/MDX - Murray, Clancy, Broker, Hoskins, Marsden, Wilson, Sale

GGfather Michael Wilson born Cork, lived Fulham London - moved to Boston USA 1889, what happened next?

Have found this info which could be your couple - Wingfield is not far from Hoxne, Laxfield, Badingham or Framlingham.

a Henry CHANDLER (abode Wingfield) married Jane SPALDING 9 Oct 1826, Laxfield

a couple with the same names christened the following children that I have found
from suffolk Bpt Index - Hoxne Deanery:
20 Jan 1828 Robert Verdan Chandler son of Henry & Jane, Wingfield St Andrew
(fathers occ.  farmer)

17 May 1829 Samuel Spalding Chander son of Henry & Jane, Wingfield St Andrew
(fathers occ.  farmer)

12 Aug 1833 Maria Chandler daug of Henry & Jane, Badingham, St John the Baptist.
(Fathers occ:  Publican)

2 Feb 1834 Charles Baldry Chandler son  of Henry & Jane, Badingham, St John the Baptist.
(Fathers occ:  Publican)

 from familysearch.org
Jane Chandler 17 Oct 1830 parents Henry & Jane in Dickleburgh, Norfolk.  Dickleburgh is not far from Wingfield & fills the gap between 1829 & 1833 in the above bpts.

Priscilla Chandler bpt 16 Dec 1839 Framlingham, parents Henry & Jane

There is a burial (Suffolk Burial Index) of a Henry CHANDLER 1 Jun 1877 - looks like the burial was recorded at St Michaels, Framlingham on 1 Jun 1877 age given as 86, but he was actually interred at Framlingham Cemetery on 1 Jun 1877 age given as 85/occ Labourer.  So if this is your man he was likely born c1791/2, which seems to fit with his age on CRs.

This couple might be worth noting as a possible next generation back
Henry Chandler (abode Laxfield) married Pleasance Richards 4 Jun 1795 Hoxne, St Peter & St Paul.  Date slightly out compared to info above but they could still feasibly be the right couple.  Hope someone can track down a baptism for you.
