The thing is, in this case, at least three of John Ennis's adopted children were not orphans.  I don't know anything about Loren's situation, but Carrie had a surviving widowed father, siblings and grandparents; James had both parents and siblings; and Ronnie had a widowed mother and siblings.  And none of them was related in any way to the Ennis family.
