Genealogy link - HARRIS / REED
« on: Friday 17 May 13 10:23 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I'm a relative novice to family history and need clarification on a possible relationship. I recently received a email out of the blue from an experienced researcher in USA stating that he is my cousin. I don't fully understand the exact relationships between family's (e.g. cousin to uncle, cousin to 2nd cousin).

I attach a simple family tree for my family and Mark Reed.  Could someone please clarify exactly what relationship, if any, Mark is to me. I believe that my Abraham Harris is a first cousin to Mark Reed's Abraham Harris.

 ???

Any relationship is based on common blood ancestor of both people, so if both share the same Grandparents they are first cousins, share the same great Grandparents 2nd cousins. The easiest way is to either use your own FH software to calculate, mine does 'calutate relationships' in reports or there are many online ones such as http://www.searchforancestors.com/utility/cousincalculator.html

looking at the baptism on http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Baptisms&RecordID=10237724
I can only find these 2 that meet the dates you are looking for.
Abraham Harris
baptised St Leonards Bilston
4th Feb 1821
parents John and Catherine Harris
Father a Pudler.
There is no baptism for an Abraham in 1834, but one in 1838
St Peters Wolverhampton
1st Apr 1838
Parents George and Jane Harris
father a miner.
To be related , you need to connect the fathers of the Abrahams .If the Abrahams are first cousins their fathers must be brothers, and they will have a shared set of grandparents.

If you are correct in your assumption that the two Abrahams were first cousins, then they shared a grandfather and this person would be your 4xgreat grandfather and also the 4xgreat grandfather of Mark's mother, Patricia Mills. You and Patricia Mills are 5th cousins and her son, Mark would be your 5th cousin once removed. Mark would be 6th cousin to your children.

Hope this has not confused you too much. As others have suggested you could use a family tree program to work this out. Of course, you must prove that the two Abrahams were indeed first cousins and shared a Harris grandfather.

hth,
Carmela
