Nethershaugh
« on: Wednesday 15 May 13 22:29 BST (UK) »
Since I have never been to been to Shaugh and can't seem to find the info online, would some one please explain to me what constitutes Nethershaugh. Is it one farm, a collection of farms, a community of some sort (especially in early 1800's)? Per 1841 census there seems to be four families living there so does this indicate four separate farms? And can anyone tell me if William Damerell (1775-1837) and wife Susanna Maddock (1787-1861) leased one of the farms at Nethershaugh up to his death in 1837?

If you use royalmail.com then postcode finder and enter name of building and Shaugh Prior as the location it offers Nethershaugh Cottage and Nethershaugh Farm, each has an accompanying map. Nether by the way means lower or under probably as a dip or small valley near the village.

Hi there
Had a look at the 1798 land redemption tax and no William Damerell ,there are 2 Damerell's Robert senior and younger, both renting from James Heywood esquire trustees.
The latter tithe maps should provide the answer to your question,so try Devon record office or apparently there is a book by Mike Brown- Dartmouth tithe appointments vol 2 1997 from Dartmouth press.
Ps just found the tithe for 1842 on the Friends of Devon Archives website. Sussannah is the lessee from Sir Raplh Lopes of land at Nethershaugh and Lapthorne occupied by a Edward Damerell presumably the son. There also John and Thomas Damerell.
