did you find him?

if not............

where was he born?
does he have siblings?
do you know his parents names?
did he marry? if so.........when and to whom?
when did he die?
anything else you can tell us to assist the lookup?

Thank you so much for replying.  I did look in the 1841 census eventually but could not determine which James Dix was the right one, there were 2 of them that could have been him.  He was born in Edmonton Middlesex according to every other census between 1821 - 1826 and he married an Elizabeth/Betsy Hawkins from Hichin Herts.  I cannot find a record of marriage but it was after the 1851 census was taken.  Their first child was born in 1852 but of course they could have married any time.  He died on March 15th 1883 at St Albans, it was in the Herts Advertiser and I have a copy of the death cert.  Betsy was dead by then as a daughter whom I think was Anne Dix but was named as Anny Hendson from Tottenham attended the death. James & Betsy had 11 children.  And that's all i know about him.

Hi Bryant,

Thank you for your help. The child born in 1852 was Emily Caroline Dix often known as Caroline.  All of the children were born in St Albans, Herts.
In 1851 James was single and living alone in St Albans, Herts on St Peters Street.  He is 25 and a painter.
In 1861 he is shown as James W. Dix living with Elizabeth Dix and children Eliza, Emily C, Henry, James W., & John E in St Albans.  This is the only time Betsy is shown as Elizabeth and the only time she is shown as being born in St Albans, Herts.  I can only conclude that someone else other that Betsy answered the census.  James is shown as being born in Edmonton Middlesex.  As I said he always gave Edmonton as his place of birth.  I have found other Dix families in Edmonton but cannot link him to them.  And the name is definately Dix but is sometimes spelt as Dicks.
Thanks, Debbie

Thank you Bryant.  I think I will try to get one of the childrens birth early birth certs to see if I can get the mothers name.  My ggrandfather was Walter Andrew Dix and his other is shown as Betsy Hawkins on his birth cert.  Your point about Elizabeth & Betsy maybe being 2 different people is a good one - thanks for giving it a fresh eye.
