McFarland/Gallagher

Hi there,

I am trying to track down my great-grandparents, William McFarland and Rose Gallagher. William was born around 1899 and Rose about 1906. I am not sure of their parents names, although I believe Rose's father could be a Joseph Gallagher. Rose came from "Southern Ireland" (my family aren't too sure where) and William was from Co. Fermanagh (I believe it was Enniskillen), William had a brother named Francis McFarland. Whilst Rose had a sister, Mary (she married a Patrick Callgie?).

William and Rose had seven children that survived after birth (it was said they had lost six/seven children before my grandfather was born). The seven children that survived are: William Joseph, Francis, Bridget, Patrick, Violet, Vincent and Mary. Unfortnuately, my branch has lost contact with the others so I am not able to find out anymore from them.

My grandfather, Joe moved to Scotland sometime in the 1950s, with two of his brothers following. Whilst others moved downwards to England and others stayed in Ireland.

I would be very greatful with any help anyone can offer me.

Thanks for the reply, I can't seem to find anything for William. There's a possible one for Rose in 1911 in Donegal, she's two and with her father Joseph, mother Mary and a sister Mary. So it could very well be her.

This line of the family has been a mystery, I'm hoping to get into contact with any of my grandfathers siblings, but I've had no luck. I really appreciate any help anyone can offer.

do you know their religions ,i see a possible match in fermanagh on 1901 and 1911 census search for Irvine Mcfarland as his father.

According to my mum, the McFarlands were Protestant and the Gallaghers Catholic. And they marriage caused a scandal within the family forcing them to leave Ireland for a while. My grandfather and his siblings were raised as Catholic. Thank you I will have a look.

are you sure you have the time frame for them right, do you know your grandfather joe's birthdate , the only one of the children that i could get a [possible] birth is vincent born in lisnakea 1917  which would mean that rose would have to be older than you think,are they all definately born in ireland. are you guessing their dates from ages on death certs?.

My granda was born 1934 the oldest, so the rest must have been born late 1930s/40s. It was thought my granda had his parents birth/death certs and once he died they went to my aunt. However, she only has my grandparents, so i'm assuming theirs went to another brother? From what my mum has told me, William died late 70s, early 80s whilst Rose died a few years after my granda, so sometime in the late 90s.

The online civil registration index only goes up to 1921 for Northern Ireland counties so any births after that date will not be shown.

Thank you aghadowey, I did think that but wasn't sure. I'm not really concerned about his siblings, but more his parents. They really are a mystery for my family, but I won't give up! Hopefully i'll be able to find something soon
