Ancestry & Scotland's People
« on: Sunday 12 May 13 15:10 BST (UK) »
Hi, Chatters:

I thought that Ancestry had the majority of censuses on its site.  Now I find that some Scottish censuses are still missing.  How common is this?

I am trying to find the 1871 and 1891 censuses for Greenock on Ancestry but have so far had no luck.  Or at least, of the family I am seeking.  I have a copy on Scotland's People but, for whatever reason, I can no longer download copies from this site onto my computer so that I can then upload them into the family tree so I am getting hugely frustrated.

I am also having trouble finding some certificates on Scotland's People, despite being given specific dates, names and places, in this case a death in 1909 (which you would have thought, being so 'recent' would be there for sure).

Does anyone else have this problem?

Ancestry does indeed have all Scotland censuses - except 1911.

Perhaps it's the way you are searching?
Or maybe the family wasn't in Greenock?
Or there's a problem with transcription?

Hi

I've just checked on Ancestry. I just put in Renfrewshire and Greenock and there appears to be 58,358  records for there in 1871.  Are you sure that the family  that you are looking for are there?  or maybe they have been mistranscribed.

PS

If you go to Viewed Images on SP (top left) , you'd be able to find the censuses that you've looked at  there.

Thank you, folks, for the swift replies.

I have the image of the 1871 census on my computer in my Scotland's People site.  It is of West Greenock, the burgh of Greenock.  The details are:

Alexander Maclean, 39, Grocer
Catherine Maclean, wife, 30
Catherine, dtr, 2
Christina, dtr, 5 mos
Christina ??, servant, 15
Lachlan McGillivray 25, nephew, Porter
Angus McGillivray 25, nephew, Student, Free Church Normal School.
The 2 children were born in Greenock, otherwise the rest in Kilfinichen, Argyll.

It is Lachlan and Angus I am really chasing.

The census form is legible, but nothing under any of these names is coming out on Ancestry for 1871.

I have a record of Lachlan in the 1891 census in Greenock in LDS - but again not on Ancestry.
Any ideas?

Some of the transcriptions of theScottish censuses on Ancestry leave a lot to be desired. You might need to be creative in your searches.  :)

Look for Lachlan McGilvary aged 45

Thanks, Jen:  Did that and got the 1891 census.  It seems strange that that would be the problem as normally Ancestry brings up ALL the variants (provided the search is set for 'Default Settings' of course) and there are many of them for the MacGillivray name!!  I've tried it for the 1871 census and am still not getting anything at all...it seems most peculiar.  I do know that occasionally they have missed off a page of the census - possibly the person copying has not separated the pages properly.  I have, for example, a photocopy of my father's 1891 census form (a cousin had physically gone to the records office and photocopied the originals) but that particular page is not on Ancestry, although the previous page with 4 other members of the family is!  Ah well, I'll just keep trying and hoping that someone out there has more answers for me.

Hi

The family are indexed in 1871 on another site (not SP) as you've listed them but, as you say, they don't seem to be on the Ancestry index. I've used minimal info to search.
