Shrubsole - Christian, marriage, Lympn.e 1901
« on: Sunday 12 May 13 11:37 BST (UK) »
Freereg tells me that Eliza Amy Shrubsole married Herbert Edward Christian 20 July 1901 at St. Stephens, Lympne. I wonder if the PR gives more detail, such as parents, status etc.
Can anyone help me please.  Thanks, Ron G.

Using her year of birth from the latest census (which I can't disclose!), I think this is Eliza in 1891?

I can't find anything at all on Herbert Edward Christian?!

No birth; not on any census?
The online trees haven't found anything either!

Have just found an Ancestry tree (Kamm family tree) showing Eliza Amy Shrubsole. married to Herbert Edward Christian. But that says Eliza died in Toronto and Herbert in Staffordshire, England in 1946. I was led to believe he died in Canada. Will have to check that with my cousin in Canada who I am helping with info from this end.     R.

I am not sure if this helps but the tree for Edward gives his birth place as Ashford, DEVON.
Death - 23 Sep 1946, born c1880, in Wolverhampton, Staffs.

In 1901, there is a Richard Christian, a coachman, in Ashford, KENT, born in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.
His wife, Mary A, was born in Ireland.

In 1891, there is a Mary A Christian in Toxteth, Liverpool, with a son Herbert, born 1880 in Ireland.
Richard Christian, a coachman, is living separately in Kent.

There is a record of an Edward Herbert Christian born to Richard and Anne Marie Christian, nee Voss, in Wells, Wexford, Ireland, on 1 Mar 1880.

The marriage was in London in 1866 - Richard Christian and Ann M Voss.

Further to my previous message, there are several trees with Richard Christian and his family but they give a death for him as 1902. However, he is on the 1911 census with Mary and three of the children.

We can't give the details on this site but you can search the index on familysearch.org, which gives their birth places. Search on Christian in Ashford, Kent. Note that some birth places are transcribed incorrectly.

Richard died in 1914, age 66, and Mary in 1940, age 81. Both West Ashford District.

David

P.S. Eliza and children are on the 1911 census and the outward passenger list of the Royal George, which left Bristol for Quebec on 30th October 1912.

Perhaps Herbert was in Canada for the 1911 census.

There is a Herbert CHRISTIAN (born England age 30) on a 1910 passenger list for Canada, a horsekeeper/stableman who had worked at this job for 15 years in England and intending to be a farmer in Canada.  I think he was destined for Montreal if my memory serves me correctly (I found this yesterday so haven't double checked as I was trying to find something else to confirm or otherwise that this may be the correct man).  He seemed to be travelling with a Charles Thomas? WILLIAMS, also a stableman, or at least they had consecutive ticket numbers so given the occupation I deduced that they possibly knew each other/worked together.  WILLIAMS was aged 23 I think.

As one of his children was born in Brompton, Kent I did wonder about a military connection?  The parish registers for Brompton, Gillingham, Chatham etc. are online at Medway Cityark http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/ .......... a baptism, if it is there, should give an occupation.

Herbert would be the prime age for serving in WW1 so unless there was a reason he was unable to serve this may be something else worth looking into.  I couldn't see him in the online indexes for the CEF at the Canadian Archives :-\
