CHAMBERS marriage record Norwich 1770s
« on: Wednesday 08 May 13 05:22 BST (UK) »
I would much appreciate help in finding a marriage record for CHARLES CHAMBERS who christened 2 sons in Norwich in the 1770s- Charles (1776 at Southgate) and William (1779 at St Etheldreda). The mother on the christening records is AMY.

William later married the vicar's daughter from Lyng (at St Mathews in the Field, Middlesex in 1800) and William was also said to be from Lyng, where their first child was born in 1801 - so perhaps there was a family link with Lyng, but I do not know how far back it might have gone and hence whether it would have been relevant to the 1770s marriage location.

Have you searched the Norfolk records on
 https://www.familysearch.org/   ?

As well as the indexed collection of Norfolk parish registers, there are:

England, Norfolk Archdeacon's Transcripts, 1600-1812
England, Norfolk Bishop's Transcripts, 1685-1941
England, Norfolk Marriage Bonds, 1557-1915

Unfortunately these aren't indexed at present, so it won't be easy going through them, but maybe there is something there.

UK Census info. Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Thank you Galium for this help, I wasn't aware of those non-indexed records being available there. Much appreciated.  Regards NSWelshwoman

From the diary of Parson James Woodforde of Weston Longville 21 May 1800:

"Chambers of Lyng (Shopkeeper at Lyng) was
married lately to Mr Wilson's eldest Daughter
of Lyng, they were married in London"

I don't know about the Chambers family but the two John Wilsons, father and son feature in the pages of the diary. John Jnr was baptised at Elsing 31 March 1750, his father's parish. He appears to have been an only child, his mother Priscilla dying in 1768. His father took his marriage very badly and they became estranged. When James Woodforde first moved to Weston in 1776 John Jnr was living at the parsonage house there and moved out to Reepham where it appears his children were born. I don't think he ever held a living of his own but made ends meet serving as a curate in various parishes (notably Great Witchingham in the 1780s) and then later at Lyng. He died at Lyng and was buried at Reepham on 7 October 1806.

I haven't read it, but the Norfolk Record Office holds the will of John  Wilson, clerk, of Elsing  1781  NCC, will register, Poynter, 155  - it would be interesting to see what, if anything, he said about his son.

Many thanks Carole for this wonderfully helpful bit of information!  It has sent me scurrying to the Parson Woodforde Society's website but I see there are any number of editions and versions of this marvellous source of information. Do you imagine there might be more to find about my Chambers and Wilsons if I get a copy of a relevant volume - or have you already been able to reference a reasonably comprehensive version? I would be interested  to know the reference you have used for my future reference, if you wouldn't mind passing it on.

Thank you also for alerting me to John Wilson's will of 1781 which i am keen to get a copy of but am rather perplexed by NROCAT's direction as to how I go about this ie it says 'Make a note of the Catalogue Ref and Date and use microfilm MF 448'.  Are you able to tell me if it is only (physically) in the NRO that I can access this record or if there are other - preferably online - alternatives?

Thanks so much Carole for this assistance.  NSWelshwoman
