« on: Friday 03 May 13 13:28 BST (UK) »
Hi there,
I am research William Campbell, from Belfast, County of Down. His parents were James Campbell and Elizabeth Lowther He was born around 1831-1834. James Campbell was a Ship Carpenter.

I have found it difficult to progress any further and source his family in Ireland. Any help greatly apprecriated.

Rosemary

I just found records for my gr-gr grandfather who was a ship's carpenter.  Well, got help from someone here.  :)  Went to Find My Past - and narrowed search down to 'work and occupations'.  Fill in what information you can and check each document.  (You need membership but I've been told they are running a special this month.)  If you get his record, it will probably give date and town of birth.  Hopefully that will help.

Good luck!

From Mary Lennons great website http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk that always needs donations
In 1880
47 Campbell, Thomas, ship carpenter, in Short Strand
In 1877
Campbell, James T., cabinet maker, 27 Elm Street
Campbell, Jas., ship carpenter, 99 Short Strand
Campbell, James, carpenter, 54 Theodore Street
In 1861
36  James Campbell, carpenter. In McTIER STREET
runs Shankill Road to Old Lodge Road
In 1852
7. James T. Campbell, cabinet maker in Ann Street runs
Corn Market to Queen's Bridge

From http://streetdirectories.proni.gov.uk/
In 1884
47 Campbell, Mrs Jane, in Short Strand
so James has died or left
In 1870
Campbell, Jas., ship carpenter, 37 Short Strand
In 1865 no mention of James but unnumbered list
Campbell, Thomas, ship carpenter, in Short Strand

one could narrow down between 1865-1870 when he arrives.
Have you exhausted familysearch.com, and PRONI.
For James and William Burials might exist e.g. Belfast city cemetery, Clifton St and Millfield mainly catholic not easily searched yet.
Williams birth seems important was he born 1831-34.
Good luck onwards JimG
