Strangely the birth date on the WW1 Draft is a month earlier  ??? John Gallagher 28 Feb 1884.
He had declared his intention to become a citizen at this date. Bricklayer for Inter State Iron & Steel.
Nearest relative :- Elizabeth Gallagher. John was medium height (5 ft 6 ins) Medium Build, Brown Eyes and Black hair. No Distinguising Marks.

Sept 1918

John was born on 29 March 1884 (I have his birth certificate), but I'm sure this is the right John Gallagher (amongst the thousands of Gallagher men named John). Thank you so much for your sleuthing...and my family will be so pleased to hear about John and Elizabeth's adventures in America - it has been such a mystery! I will look further at his military records on Ancestry.com too, so I can learn where he served. :) Helen

All men of a certain age were required to complete the draft registration cards.  It doesn't mean that they were actually drafted or ever served in the military.

Hi  :)

Just to confirm the age difference for the record!  I started looking at this very early this morning but got side tracked and then had to do an urgent Photoshop project for work.

Anyway, I looked at their marriage cert and found that there was a 5 year age diff. - John was 26 and Elizabeth was 31. See attached.

Thanks Shelley and to everybody else for solving these family mysteries...as they seem to have had no children, I guess there is little chance of finding either of them on any family trees!  I posted originally only a couple of hours ago, and now I have all these answers :) :) Great stuff and thanks once again. How would I go about finding dates of death for John and Lizzie? Ancestry.com searches show several possibilities, but the images shown don't have enough detail to be confident that I would be looking at the right ones.  ::) Helen

Hi Helen,

Shelly said on another thread yesterday that " Ancestry.com is scanning Pennsylvania death certificates and they are due to be online by the end of 2013"

Have you tried reading the thread - Pennsylvania Death Indexes, 1906-1961. Plus  listed in the resources thread.

Thanks Sandra: my couple were last traced to Cook County Illinois (1940 census): is there something similar for that state? ???
