My guess at the location is present day Iraq; or just possibly Aden. Fascinating either way. The tragedy is that there are vandals who would put such an item into a car boot sale; I suppose it is better than a skip though!!

I seem to have spent hours reading websites relating to the Mesopotamian campaigns of WW1 since you first posted the photos YT.  I am amazed at how much I have learnt and, to  my shame, how little I knew about WW1 in this area of the world.
