I think it's the same citadel in both photos, Maggie, but taken from further down the coast.  Interestingly there are quite a few photos online taken during the Mesopotamian campaigns so clearly a lot of people took their cameras with them.  Mind you I haven't seen a set as comprehensive or exciting as this one.

These photos remind me so much of some 3D sepia pictures my grandmother used to have. I think they were known as stereo photos and you used a wooded viewer to look at the double photos. I was very young but my cousin and I would spend hours looking at them. I remember them as of foreign, hot places, with camels, nomads and battle scenes and we found them quite scarily fascinating.

Like this one - an example of the type of photo but the ones I remember looking at were of WWI
