Seems to me highly likely that there would be several in one grave given the number of dead each day, the hardness of the terrain and the need to get them buried quickly.

There seem to be 4 names on that close grave don't there.

Brings it all home doesn't it!   Very sad indeed.  Horrific actually.
Gaunt, Ransom, McNally, Stanfield, Kimberley. (Tasmania)
Brown, Johnstone, Eskdale, Brand  (Dumfriesshire,  Scotland)
Booth, Bruerton, Deakin, Wilkes, Kimberley
(Warwicks, Staffords)
Gaunt (Yorks)
Percy, Dunning, Hyne, Grigg, Farley (Devon, UK)
Duncan (Fife, Devon), Hugh, Blee (Cornwall)
Green, Mansfield, (Herts)
Cavenaugh, Ransom (Middlesex)

Very poignant. I have a similar photo of my OH's uncle's grave in Khartoum in 1943 aged 19.  Somehow it seems even sadder to me with their graves in such a hostile unfamiliar (to them)environment.

Can you tell me how many photographs are in the album? And if you don't mind, how much you paid for it? (understandable if you prefer not to say  ;))
[/quote] Just over 150 in this album, some, not many, are no good. I paid £10 for this album along with some more.

There is a window in St Mary's Church, Guildford, dedicated to the memory of John Huleatt Brownrigg:

Absolutely fascinating lesson in WWI history and to see it through these remarkably poignant pictures brings the reality home doesn't it?
