Thanks Jacquie for all the information especially confirming that I have the correct William by giving his wife's name.  Her death is mentioned in an Aberdeen newspaper but there was not enough to confirm I had the correct William.

William's sailing could have been later.  I estimated the year from an extract from an Aberdeen newspaper which said he was missing in 1916.  I wonder if it was during this period that his health was affected.  I will try an pursue this side.

I am going to have a good look at all the information that I now have, which is very exciting.  I wonder if the funeral home would give me any details to see if there were children.  Although I would have thought they would have been mentioned on the death notice.

I did find a William D Barron on 1935 Voters List at 35 W Crystal Winnipeg he is listed along with his wife says he is a pensioner.

That would make him 45. Maybe a bit young ....

It has just dawned on me that this is probably my guy.  He may have been on a war pension and unfit to work.

I emailed the cemetery and was lucky enough to get a photo of William’s grave stone. It was really kind of them.
