BAROWSKI - brick wall ... iron curtain ... where do I start
« on: Tuesday 30 April 13 22:08 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Of the thousands of surnames on Rootschat I did not find mine ... Barowski. Apart from utter frustration it makes me sad.
Years ago I posted a message on Rootsweb and had one reply. What is frustrating is whenever I search Barowski, Google asks do I mean Borowski.
Is there someone on Rootschat with "Polish/Lithuanian" knowledge/interest or who knows of a reputable site that could help with family history from Suwalki (now Poland)

My grandfather "said" he was born in Suwalki in 1894, to Joseph Ba/orowski (wheelwright) and Mary Graziskas. That is all I have to go on.

Not only try and find Barowski, Graziskas is a bit rare also.

I realise my grandfather may have changed his name as thousands of eastern europeans did for various reasons. He "jumped ship" with no identification papers. Yes, he was naturalised and we have trawled through those but gives no further knowledge. So many times I say "give up" but he was my grandfather, not a distant name in the past. No other family here in Victoria have any more information than I.

Guess what ... spell check suggested I had spelt his name incorrectly ................................

Tavy

I suggest that what you are looking for is probably not online. The best ways forward will be one of:

1. To use a local researcher (perhaps via the website Claire found) who can access local archives.
2. To look at LDS records which have been microfilmed (several sets of church records appear to be available, indexed under location Poland, Białystok, Suwałki)
3. To write directly to local archives/churches for copies of the appropriate records (if you can determine who holds what records and what information they require/fees they charge).

As the main records are likely to be church records, it would help to know what denomination he belonged to after immigration (Catholic, etc).

Thank you ...

for the experts on shipping records. My grandfather jumped ship possibly the “Waorm” (maybe Woorm)

We think that In 1913, as a sailor or deck hand he worked on a merchant ship, Waorm, which sailed from the Belgian port of Antwerp and eventually to Melbourne, Australia, in April 1913. Here Hans "Barowski" deserted ship.

Can someone help find this ship and maybe a list of the crew. He was somewhere out there on the oceans in 1913.

Thanks

Ship may be the "Worms":
http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/descriptions/ShipsWZ.shtml
Built in 1907 for the German-Australian line.

Trove shows a reference in April 1913 of the ship Worms, from Antwerp, having left London on her way to Sydney (may have of course stopped at other Australian ports).

Hy Tavy,
try this site
http://genealodzy.pl/  home page find search and type a name
or
http://www.geneszukacz.genealodzy.pl/index.php?search_lastname=Barowski&rpp1=&bdm=&url1=&w=&lang=pol&op=se

when I typed in Search I found a lot of name (in thousand) so in Poland it is not uncommon as such.
Also on this site
http://www.mem.net.pl/stg/
you can find  Suwalskie Towarzystwo Genealogiczne - link, go there and they will help you.

Good luck
