Thank you for this info. which I will look at in depth. As records are lost we tend to come up against a brick wall. Any other info gratefully received.

You are I think right. Do you happen to know who Richard H of Tarnbrook married, or who his parents were please ? This info would help me a lot.

Thanks

Jackie

His second wife was Ellen ASH of [Dutton Lee?], Ribchester, m 15 Oct 1692 Lancaster St Mary, bur 28 Sep 1741 Wyresdale Chapel or Nov 1748 Wyresdale Chapel (can't work out which, can you?). His 1737 Will leaves "my wife Elling" the "tenement at Dutton Lee". In 1708 he renewed a lease on a farm in Dutton [presumably Dutton Lee] which appears in the Registers of the Estates of Lancashire Papists 1717-1718. I have no idea if he was the Papist, or whether it was the owner of the land. Probably the latter, though some Hs in Overwyresdale were papists.
Richard seems to have had an earlier wife but I have not found the marriage.
Nor have I found his baptism. However I believe him to be the son of Richard H c 17 Feb 1629/30 Lancaster St Mary f. Johnis, bur 23 Jun 1701 Lancaster St Mary as Richard H of Wyresdale. Unfortunately he died intestate, but there is a 1701 Admon for Richard H of Upper Wyresdale, Yeoman, Dowager, which seems to be him, signed by his son Richard, so it is clear he had a son Richard even though the baptism appears to be lost.
Hope this helps. Any info on Hathornthwaites you spot would be much appreciated, particularly H mentions in non-H Wills, which can be helpful but impossible to search for systematically.
Peter

For a fuller rendition of what we think we know about Richard Hathornthwaite of Tarnbrook, and all his tribe, you might like to go to www.haythornthwaite.com where (amongst other things) you can consult or download my book "The Hathornthwaites". If you want, you can then email me direct with further information or questions. In addition to the book content, I have transcriptions/extracts of about 90 H-related Wills, which you might find of relevance to your research. The version of the book online is the state of play as at 31 Dec 2012, and does not include the very recently noticed fact that William Helme who married Ann Hathornthwaite was an Executor of this Richard H's 1737 Will. At that stage, I was unclear which Ann she was. Now I think I know (but always subject to new evidence!)

Peter, Good Afternoon

Wow, I was very impressed by your book, of course I haven't had time to read it all as yet, given time I will.

I am no expert in this field, and have bumbled along the best I could with Ancestry.

I doubt that I will uncover anything that you do not already know. However, it is kind of you to offer assistance, and I will accept with thanks.

Regards,

Jackie

Other than Ancestry, I expect you are aware of Lancs Online Parish Clerks, which is excellent (but for Lancashire only) and free! Beyond that, I have found some fascinating snippets by simply googling a person's name and some related words like rent, or prison, or debt or freeman or clock. This often comes up with an unexpected out of print book digitised by Google, or a reference to the person in Abstracts from the National Archives. You never know what you are going to find, so you might well stumble on something new.

Best wishes

Peter
