Parish records for St Sepulchre in Holborn,London.
« on: Monday 29 April 13 10:17 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Just really want to know the best site for looking up parish records for the St Sepulchre area in London pre 1837. Have tried a couple of sites but having trouble finding anything I can just download on line.

Regards

Coreen

Hi Coreen

The surviving registers deposited at the London Metropolitan Archives have been digitised, transcribed and put online at Ancestry, they have a special landing page for the London Record collection.

Hope this helps

I know this is an old post, but I'm asking the same question!

Looking on Ancestry, it would appear that they're missing scans between 1715-1730 (which is highly annoying as I'm looking for a baptism for 1728).

I've e-mailed LMA to ask if those particular years are still available to view (i.e. if Ancestry just missed them during the digitisation process). The transcriptions are available, just not the images, alas.

Cheers,

Nick

Hi Dawn,

I want to find out if the actual entry has any additional information on it (e.g. "of this parish", occupation of father, etc.)? Of course, with it being a 16th Century Baptism record, it may just state what the transcription states and nothing more!

The transcription (initially from familysearch, and also replicated to Ancestry) states the following:

Name:    John Waek
Gender:    Male
Birth Date:    26 Sep 1728
Baptism Date:    20 Oct 1728
Baptism Place:    St Sepulchre,London,London,England
Father:    Robert Waek
Mother:    Elizabeth
FHL Film Number:    374999, 375000

I believe the surname should be "Wake", and that John is possibly an illegitimate child born to Elizabeth, the daughter of the Reverend Robert Wake (with Elizabeth possibly adding the name of her father to "hide" the illegitimate nature of the birth). I could be barking up the wrong tree, of course! ;)

Cheers,

Nick

The original register is held in store and is accessed on microfilm at LMA, reference P69/SEP/001/A/MS07219/004.
If no-one can look it up for you, you could order a printout from the film, but I think it is very unlikely to include the information you're seeking.

Hi,

Many thanks - much appreciated. As I live in Hertfordshire, going into London is relatively straightforward, so I'll put it onto my "to do list" shortly.

You're probably right about it not containing any further information (it being a 16th Century record), but until I see it, I won't know!  ;D

Cheers,

Nick

The same would probably apply with an 18th-century record too.  ;)
