Can any1 help me find info regarding my grandfather?
« on: Monday 29 April 13 03:28 BST (UK) »
Im trying to find any information on the time my grandfathers spent when called to National Service, only I have no clue as to how or were to start. Also, I have very little information to go-on.
My grandfathers name was 'Richard Glyn Williams', but went by his second name 'Glyn'.
He was born in 1931, and died at the age of 40 due to a heart condition, year 1971.
At the time he was called for service, he was living in 'Tanygrisiau, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Gwynedd', and I believe the year was 1949.
After uploading his photo to this site, we now know that he was with the Royal Artillery.
I have no service number, and dont know where he was sent, or anything ells concerning his service time, other than what is stated above.  Thank You

Hi mandywills,

I don't have the first clue on how to find out info for the military in the UK but I think this website
may help point you in the right direction.

With his full name and year and place of birth you should be able to obtain his service records via this site:
http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html
This will also give you his service number and other information. There are documents you need to supply to prove kinship, but you should be eligible for a copy of the documents (or one of your grandfather's children if still alive, will be able to apply). All the information you need is on the above link. There is a cost of £30 and a wait of about 12 months for the records, but it is well worth it.
